so i swapped the focus and g2 flyback wires....
« on: September 24, 2006, 11:57:02 am »
Okay,  so i was having flyback problems on a hantarex 900/e. When i replaced it i reversed the solder connections of control wires. Needless to say I found out that the spark gaps in pins 7/8 of the crt socket did its job. I re soldered the wires back correctly however i still have no picture, though i hear some decent static. It appears there is no deflection since I've got no orange glow on the filaments. I am suspecting i damaged the HOT somehow or some other component. First question- where is the hot on this particular chassis? Second question- is there a decent way to test it short of replacing it? Third question- Does anyone have a neck board or socket/parts for this monitor that they might be willing to part with for a nominal fee if the socket turns out to be bad as well or know of a socket that will work? - Hosiden- the manufacturer does not have these, and Bob Roberts does not either.

Any help is sure appreciated!

thanks,
Jeff

is there not a safety resistor on the neck card on the g2 line?
do you still get a glow from the neck of the tube?

He mentioned he had static (HV) but no heater glow....

What is the monitor make and model?

He mentioned it was a Hantarex 900e. On all flybacks the smaller diameter wire is usually the screen voltage (G2) wire (approximately 300 to 600 volts). The larger diameter wire is usually the focus voltage (approximately 8,000 volts!) wire. Naturally the thick red wire with the suction cup is the high voltage wire that goes directly to the tube.

If you need parts, R.H. Belam in New York is the official Hantarex distributor (www.belamny.com).

i am pretty sure there is a safety resistor on the g2(neck card),bet you had different colour wires on the new flyback to the old(people used to do that all the time on the 9000 series with the replacement flyback-but they seemed to survive o.k)

thanks for the feedback. after tracing the g2 line it appears that i have a bad ceramic capacitor (c53) now the problem is no one locally carries a cap this high. I found a polyester film cap at Bluestar International website that has the same rating, but is it okay to use it instead of a ceramic one?  the caps rating is 6800pf 2000v. if not does anyone know where i can get one? ceramic seems hard to come by.

by the way, the resistor seems to check out okay, but im replacing it anyway, just to be on the safe side.

thanks.

Grantspain,

I'm in the United states so I guess that wont work. the polyester film cap at Bluestar is the only place i've found so far. the price is great at  $ 0.62 but the shipping is $7.00 yikes!. i emailed them hoping they would be nice enough to send me a sample of it, so we'll see.

thanks for the help.

Ken,

Yeah, Bob was the one who referred me to Bluestar. He doesnt carry any that high either. By the way, Bluestar wasnt interested in sending me a sample or giving me a discount on the shipping. Now i guess its a battle between pure stubborness of not paying the money versus impatience and determination to get the thing up and running again. ha!
my only other prospective so far was an auction for twenty of them/ military surplus from the Ukraine for like 17.00. But darn it all I need is one! I guess i'll keep hanging on till I find a parts chassis of this make.

Those high voltage caps are sometimes hard to find in small quantity.  Mouser, for example, doesn't stock it (though you can buy 500 of them).  Try calling up MAI Prime Parts in Indianapolis at (317) 257-6811.  The guy has an amazing amount oddball things like that (as well as a rather impressive selection of NOS tubes).  He'll probably just put it in an envelope and mail it to you, so shipping should be cheap.  If I were at home, I'd look in my "random ceramic caps" drawer, but I'm not.  If you haven't found it by tomorrow, I'll check ye ole club ham shack.  6800pF 2kV isn't that uncommon and I think we may have some, actually.

It's possible that the surplus electronics companies like All Electronics and Hosfelt Electronics might have what you need.

Try www.justradios.com as they have all types of high voltage capacitors for old radios.
