Repairing a Control Panel

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask. If not please let me know where I should ask about this.

I bought an original Tron CP from ebay. It's not in horrible shape but the edges are kind of rough. It looks like the original vinyl was done in 3 pieces. The main section and a strip along the top & bottom sides.

What I'd like to try to do is remove the edge pieces and the main section, then repaint the metal cp, then either apply new vinyl to the whole panel and then put the original main section over that or just put the main section back on the newly painted metal.

My question how do I get the original vinyl off without damaging it? I have a bottle of medical adhesive remover which may allow me to get the old vinyl off but then I need some way to put the old vinyl back on. The adhesive will be gone from it. Is there such a thing as sheets of something like double stick tape?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to damage the old vinyl if it's possible. Thanks.
