I want to burn my own carts!
« on: September 20, 2006, 12:00:40 am »
not copy a cart.
I have almost all the old systems. Systems work fine, Carts are going bad
I have the roms... I wish to burn my own carts. heck a CP flash card in a sega genesis cart....Now were talking stuff i want.
or zelda CPF in a nintendo cart

That would be my best wish list , but even a ram cart I could erase and add 1 game at a time would be nice even.
1 blank cart for each . sega genesis , Super nes, Nes, T16, sega master,2600,atari 8 bit
( I think I remember atari had blank carts out or a 3rd party did?)
any one of you guys have links to stuff out there I have no idea about.

I stumbled onto something like that for the genesis a few weeks back, but I can't remember where.  :dunno

Now that's something I would kill for. It's awesome on my GBA to write and erase games as I desire. If there was some similar device for my NES or other consoles, I'd be in hog heaven. How awesome would that be? Damn awesome, I'd say!

If done on a real cart I fail to see the point.  Carts rarely go bad.  Clean them up and store them properly and they will work far longer than the systems will.

I don't understand your statement. You fail to see the point, yet say carts are the best. I'm confused.
It would great to have a flashable cart to insert in the console -vs- trying to buy every game out there that you want, considering the age and rarity of some of the carts, they would be hard to find. Flashing a rom file to a cart would be a great solution... re-writable or not.

Then that is your point.  To play games without buying them.

That is not one of the reasons he gave in his post.  He said he wanted to recreate carts of games he has.

I've stumbled across information about this in the past.  From what I remember it sounds fairly expensive to get into, but the people who had done it liked it a lot.

Let me see if I can dig up something...

Hmm.  Not quite what you had in mind I think...   http://www.geocities.com/cartridge_project/index.html

Hmm.  The rest is mostly obviously illegal stuff (i.e. people burning ROMS they don't own).

I think I'm missing some terminology on my google searches.  I've seen a FAQ before about it.  You could look around classicgaming.com, it's possible I saw it there.

Best of luck.

I just didn't understand your wording, but with your latest reply I get what you were saying. As for his initial post where he said "I have the roms... I wish to burn my own carts"
This could be taken more than one way. It could be saying "I have the roms and wish to make my own carts from them" or "I wish to burn my own carts [that I currently own]."
I'm still not sure which way he means. No matter, I wish I had a flashable cart :)

He probably is asking for how to make his own pirated carts, but since that isn't allowed here, I left that out of possible meanings.

I've probably gone through 1000 2600 carts.  I have seen less than 5 dead ones that weren't an obvious cause like being smashed up.

CRAP! I forgot all about that... good rememory dude.
I have only clicked on the first link and will do the others next but
on the first link I see this. ( god I hope this works , never cut and pasted from another thread before)
I'm not realyl sure what's going on here...

But why is there a flash cart for SNES, Genesis, Master System, N64... basically every other system besides the NES. But those 101 games thingys  have one chip on it with all the games, that you can just re-solder a 72pin connector to, to make your own NES.

So why isn't there a flash cart yet? Forgive me. I haven't had coffee today(once agian)
ok lets drop the NES carts (even though the mapers I would think would be in the roms anyway.... are they not  dumped from the original cart in the first place?)
were are the flash carts MR Troy talked of.
cool it worked. ( cut and past)

On a related note, anyone know where to get EEPROM readers? Would be nice to take all those old carts and write them into a rom collection.

They're not all that expensive, tools wise, and can be had on ebay used pretty cheap.  I wouldn't bother buying one for just cart roms, though.  Far easier to download existing roms for carts you own.  Buying the hardware and doing the work is duplicating efforts already made.

That said, it's a damn good learning exercise and would be fun if you enjoy playing with hardware.

Not to expensive? Thats interesting.

The main reason for my interest is that some law review papers (and the fact there is currently a rom rental website out that rents time on roms) that both seem to say that the only way to be absolutely in-the-right with your roms is to create your own rom sets.

I understand it would be redundant, but thinking ahead it might be smart to grab one while I still can and "legalize" my stuff.

I really don't want to start another page full of people arguing about what is legal and what isn't, it's just an idea.

Do you know what a few of the devices are called or a site talking about a few types to start reading up on this?

Pragmatically, there is no way to differentiate between a rom you dumped yourself and a rom that you downloaded.  It would be the same.  Altering it in any way (such as with a r0mz0r group stamp) would break it.  So while you're right about the legal issue this is a case where the spirit of the law is more useful than the actual implmentation of it.

If you really want to dump yourself, I would open up a few carts.  Get to know the rom chips on them and find a chip reader that can handle as many of the types as you are going to encounter.  Then learn to solder because you're going to need to desolder the chips if you don't want to build a custom hardware reader for every cart type.

Thats a good point, the only thing is that at least some games have different serial nums right?Like when you download Street Fighter II for mame, it boots up and has that long number under the name.

My question then would be is that number a serial unique for that specific cart or is more a build number? That is the only difference I could think of, I know they will play exactly the same (or actually probably worse in the case of some of my scratched up neo-geo carts).

Thanks for hearing me out.

If it's in the software itself it's probably a checksum of the image.  If that is it it's going to be the same on every system.

I've seen blank carts for Atari XL/XE plus all the stuf you need to copy them.  Check Ebay, the guy is located in England.

Why not try SIO2PC cable or similar?  You can use your pc hdd to store/load programs, including your carts, floppy and tape.  You may have to spend additional ~$30 for software that uses this cable, but it's worth it in a long run and you are still using your original console to play:)

I had a sio2pc once
yes it was fun but you are stuck with windows 98
never tried XP.
I had windows ME at the time ( winows me and sio2pc did not get along)
also took up a large amount of space.
but it did work well with 98 and a old 486 lap top
had a blast with it,
