Question for XBOX modders.
« on: September 16, 2006, 08:53:43 pm »
I'm thinking about having my XBOX soft modded and adding a new, larger hard drive.  My question is;  How large of a drive will I need if I want to have the NES, SNES and Genesis libraries on it.  I'm not really interested in "backing up" games or ripping movies to the XBOX.

I have a spare 20 GB laying around.  Will this be sufficient?

The stock 8GB HD is plenty of space for all three of those rom sets (at least the US ones) and you will still have plenty of room left over.

The entire set of US roms for each NES, SNES and Genesis takes up 1.1GB.  All zipped of course which all the emulators support.

I've not played a workable N64 emulator on the xbox, though it's been a year or so since I've looked.

Crash is right, no need to get a bigger HDD for just those 3 systems.  MAME is the big one (Assuming MAMEdox platinum-esque size at over 3 gigs).  I added NES/SNES/2600/Genesis to a friend's modded box with no additional HDD.  He had plenty of space left.

Well, I'm thinking about using the spare 20 GB I have just so I can keep the stock drive unmolested in case I ever want to sell the unit (it's the clear green Halo version).

What' the size of the MAME set for the XBOX?

There is no "official" MAME set for the xbox.  I think the version is based on MAME 0.86, but I could be wrong.  It's been about a year since I've messed with mine.  So however big that set is.  IIRC my setup is just over 3 gigs.

xbox-scene forums usually have the most up to date information on that stuff if you're looking.  There's also a distribution out there that many use labeled mamedox platinum -- someone bundled the roms and artwork and pre-setup MAME then put it up for bittorrent download.

Is the N64 emulated well on the Xbox?

I will have to look at mine again but I have a set which has all trhee 64 emulators and when you select the game, A star will be by the emulator the game works best with.  I will have to load to give you the excat details.  But nevertheless if the star is one the game it runs w/o any issue and has sound.  Well atleast the games I have tried.

Too much hassle, though, when I could just keep an N64 by the TV.

Most games will work with the triple N64 emulator for the XBox. I could not get a few to work, but the vast majority do work. Its not all that difficult, you just select the game, pick the emulator, pick some sort of video setting, then it starts. It takes about 5-10sec unless you need to pick a different setting/emulator then it will take 5-10sec more.

it is fast.  I mean total load time (minus powering up the xbox and selecting the app) is about 5 to 10 secs.  The same amout of time to load on the N64.

But that is if you are looking for an all in one option.  If your are sick of the N64 use the exit buttons and run a different system.

I suspect it's more for the people who don't want to buy the games.  I have about 75% of the domestic N64 library so it's not an issue to keep a system set up and still have access to almost any game.

I'd go with the actual console then. I have the same N64 triple-emu setup on my softmodded Xbox and I don't enjoy it very much. If I had an actual N64 controller to use on the Xbox, that would be an entirely different story. The emulators work very well with the majority of roms, it's only the controls that I hate.

It's less useful than you probably think.  There is a lot of crap in any given console's library.

I had about 25% of it when I walked into a Blockbuster at the right moment.  The manager was pulling all of the N64 boxes down.  I asked him why and he told me to fill the boxes and put them up in the used games section... for $5 each.  $5 each for complete N64 games regardless of title?  I told him not to bother, that I would buy them all.  He's like, uh, there are more than 150 of them.  I bought them anyway and sold off all of the dups for much more than $5 each and in the end it cost me about $1 each for 100 or so complete N64 games.  Including all of the expensive titles and the Blockbuster only titles that are near impossible to get complete if at all.

Dude thought I was nuts but was ecstatic that he wasn't going to spend all day retagging and shrinkwrapping N64 games.

God, I hope he gave you a discount.  You freed up a lot of shelf space.  For the bulk of them he should have lowered it to $3 apiece.

Wasn't his decision, he was following an order from the district manager.  I did ask about that.

I recently tried the same kinda deal with a local video store owner who can't seem to sell off his SNES & N64 games at his yearly tent sale. I told him if he'd stop asking such crazy prices ($9.99-$14 a piece for these old mostly incomplete games) that I would buy them in bulk / take everything he had. He seemed to be happier at the thought of eventually selling them for $9.99 a piece, even if it takes him a thousand years. Let's see... certain money now - vs - maybe selling some eventually. I think I would have taken the cash, but I guess he's a business man and I'm not. Guess I'll stick to thrift stores for now :)

It only helps him if he has something to replace the stock.
