help from the gurus on monitor selection
« on: March 20, 2003, 06:10:09 am »
Hello oh great wise ones  ;D, I've just been getting confused on monitor selections. Here is what i am looking for:

I want a monitor that is 27", I would like a nice arcade feel to it, but would also like it to display window decently. I am putting together a cabinet with a budget of $2500-$3000 so money isn't the issue, I just can't figure out what is my best approach. After reading these glorious boards I've decided to stay away from s-video and component. so here are the monitors i'm currently looking at. All are from Happ Controls.

#1-  49-5203-00  Neotec med res ega monitor

#2-  49-5203-00  Wells Garner D9200

#3-  49-6157-00  Vison Pro vga/svga

at first glance it seems to me that #3 woud be best since it already has a 15 pin input to be plugged directly to my pc all i need to do is mount it, but again, I haven't nearly the expertise in this field that you guys do, and really could use some input. I'm also open to any other suggestions you guys might have. the easier the better, but i'm not afraid of a little work. thanks in advance

Go with the D9200.. it can do standard res up to VGA (640x200 @ 15KHz to 640x480 @ 31KHz).  Plenty of options for hooking it up, too, as far as video cards and display modes (I do believe these come with a DB-15 connector by default).  Windows will look fine on a 27" @ 640x480.

The vision pro is probably #2.. I don't know anything @ that particular monitor, but if it can't do standard res (640x200 @ 15KHz) then authenticity will be lost (then again it would be easier to plug and play with any old video card if it isn't 15KHz capable).  I'd probably bet Windows will look best on this, though -- these are like low-res computer monitors (that max out at -- usually -- 1024x768.. interlaced, unfortunately).

I wouldn't recommend a medium res monitor.  You'll have to use a video card that can support its specific refresh rates and display modes, and there will be no pleasure in wiring or configuring it.  Besides, nobody uses medium res for their games that I know of except some Atari games like APB and Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters.

Oh, and you should probably look up a Happ distributor instead of buying from Happ online.. you can probably save a little bit of money.. don't remember the name, though.. American Amusement(s)..?
