arcade monitor sparkling lights
« on: March 18, 2003, 09:27:57 pm »
the monitor tube on the back the very end that connect by the glass tube seem to be loose from the whole tube, and when power up blue lighting inside the glass tube start to appears kinda like raiden's eyes.  Before this monitor can power up fine, but i guess someone must drop something on the tube.  So my main concern is can the tube be fix, and estimate about how much?  Thanks for any respond.  And I think the monitor is pretty much dead and i didn't want to keep the lighting sparks for long (kinda dangerous) so i turned it off.

you'll probably be replacing the entire monitor.
Game programmers do not play games for a living.  Would you say a mechanic drives cars for a living?

tv repair shops can replace the tube, however you need to set up a test rig to display R/G/B fields and a crosshatch pattern so that they can set up the rings & yoke.

Replaceing the tube is easy.... IF you know what you're doing.

See the "whoooo mamaaaa" thread here.  It talks about connecting a new chassis to an existing tube.  Same diff with swapping a tube for an existing chassis.

BTW -- I think if you saw sparks and what not, your chassis is probably fried as well.... depending on where they came from, but I'd guess your flyback transformer fried too.

Tube swaps DO NOT NEED TO SWAP THE YOKE so long as the following are measured:
Horizontal and Vertical windings on the Yoke are within the same Ohm range of the original tube.

Don't make things hard trying to replace the yoke! (But also don't use a yoke that doesn't match your old one--you'll fry the chassis)

I'm a bit too tired to type all the details, but if you read that "whooo mama" thread here in the monitor forum, it addresses many things regarding chassis and tubes.  A quick search of google will yield 3 or 4 Tube Swap pages, and a very thorough search will find an old "Randy Fromm" monitor tube swap FAQ, unless he's gotten the last of the sites to remove his "copyrighted material" [that he freely posted to usenet in the early 90's and now is forcing people to remove so that he can sell the information instead... but thats another debate for another thread/time]
