Croc Hunter dead
« on: September 04, 2006, 10:06:37 am »
Steve Irwin has passed away.  During filming with stingrays, he apparently swam over top one, and it stuck its poison barb into his chest.  Normally these aren't fatal, but this one pierced his heart.

Long live the legend.  He was a kooky, yet humorous icon.

i heard someone had been killed by a stingray (not ours) and didnt know who till you just told me.

we will always have that episode of south park.

It's ironic how he spent his whole live wranglin' alligators and ends up meeting his demise by a relatively non-lethal animal.  He's gotta be feeling pretty stupid up in heaven right now.

But no disrespect meant towards him - he'll be missed.

Freak accident. Its a sad day all right, he leaves a young family behind as well. He did stacks of conservation work and made the world a much more interesting place.

Yeah, after all the deadly animals he wrestled with, he was done in by extremely bad luck.  That just really sucks.

Sad day for conservationists.

Sadly, for him, it's probably a matter of probability.  Tease the fates enough times and eventually they'll get you.

And probably a case of being extremely careful and expert with the deadly, but in a benign scenario, letting the guard down enough to get stung.

For a while, when he first hit the scene, I was taken aback by his over-the-top enthusiasm, and I questioned it's authenticity. Was he in this for the animals, or for himself (fame)?

Then I saw the show where one of his beloved crocs from his park dies...and the raw, unscripted emotion that he felt (and showed on camera) was so powerful I think even the staff filming it were overwhelmed. He broke down completely, as if he was looking at one of his kids lying there in the pool.

The dude really, really, really loved animals and I'd like to believe he made the world a little better for them. May he be reincarnated as a Croc. I think he'd really enjoy that.

Maybe I haven't seen enough of his shows, but from what I remember he was constanty teasing wild animals unnecessarely. I think you should leave wild animals alone and in peace. The ultimate stupid thing he did was talking his baby VERY near a croc while feeding it.....I mean......only wacko's do stuff like that...

Not to say I'm glad he died or anything, but if you dare fate one time too much, you're gonna pay for it.

The world REALLY over-reacted to that. Most children are in more danger being pushed down a busy street in a stroller than his kid was in his arms while he was feeding that croc.

Anyway~

Of all the ways I thought he would go, that's about at the bottom of the list, just above "mauled by kittens or puppies".

Shame to see him go-the world is a slightly darker place now. My kids always watched him when they were growing up and he did a lot for animal conservation and to promote a love of animals. We lost one of the good ones yesterday.

I read that the total number of people killed by stingrays (not per year, we're talking over the course of modern history) is somewhere between 3 and 17. Such a total freak accident.

He wasn't about his show, really.  He was a world class conservation proponent and zoologist.  His show was just a way to raise awareness.

There's no way that can actually be a valid measurement.  I've read in a couple of articles about Irwin now that it's a lot closer to 17 in the last decade.

Yeah, I've read a bunch of different numbers on it-some say 17 in a decade, some say 3 in 100 years. Whatever the number is, it's still insanely small.

And not only a graet conservationist and zoologist, but nearly all of the $$ he made from his shows went right back into conservation.  He built his home with that croc reserve/crocatorium but even that was so that he could raise awareness for conservation....

A bit over-the-top in his enthusiasm but overall a great figure in conservation awareness.

When a celeb bites it, my usual response is "Oh well, they had it better in the time they had than any normal people will ever experience.  Sucks to be him."

But not with this one.  I think he symbolized more than what people could see on the surface.  Yes, he taught us volumes about animals and showed them in a far more positive light than what we usually get from the other outlets, as well as using his fame to get people to listen to a valuable message.

But I don't think the loss of those things are what really provoked what I felt when I heard he was KIA.  This guy was pure endurance personified.  Always a happy-go-lucky type that seemed to take every situation in stride, no matter how difficult, and almost always did it with a cool head and a smile.  He seemed almost invincible, and hearing that he wasn't, drained off a little more magic from the already short supply in our everyday existence.

He will be missed in ways he probably never even considered.

I feel for his friends and mainly his family, they were number 1 in his life (he has always said that)

I really felt sad, hearing that he died. More than I thought I would of. He was a great I loved his shows and to hear he died the day after Father's Day in OZ was bad.

It's really good that everyone has said positive things towards him, I remember back in the day when some people didn't like him.

My thought's are with his family and friends.

You'll be missed Steve Irwin you were loved more than you know.

I was too very surprised by how much it bothered me. I started telling my wife about his death and I could not speak, took me a few seconds to regain composture.

I watched his shows when there was nothing else, I even saw his movie.
but I did not expect this to bother me so much.

Yeah, same here.  Usually, celeb deaths are "eh, too bad" but I was a little saddened over the passing of Steve.

Last celeb I was somewhat upset about when I heard he died was Phil Hartman.  THAT was a talented, funny, funny man.   :'(
