Actually there is mail on labor day.  In the U.S. it just doesn't get delivered.

My old man is a mail carrier...on holidays when I was growing up he would have the day off and say "Son, Why don't you go get the mail for me since It's my vacation."

He got me with that one more times than I'm proud to say....
