emulators in MAMEWAH v1.62b10
« on: August 12, 2006, 02:04:41 am »
Hello all,

I'm in the process of configuring MAMEWAH v1.62b10 but I've run into a problem getting it to recognize DAPHNE. Here's what I've done:

1) created a new folder: \config\daphne
2) created an empty daphne.ini in above folder
3) stop/started MAMEWAH to populate daphne.ini file

However, after stopping/starting MAMEWAH and pressing '2' to get to the menu, I don't get an option to select an emulator, nor is the 'daphne.ini' file populated with default settings? Funny thing is, I've tested this on another machine and it works fine; ie. MAMEWAH populates the 'daphne.ini' file and I get a 'Select Platform' option on the menu (which I'm assuming is the new wording for selecting an emulator).

I'm a bit stumped...anyone have an idea what might be the problem?

Thanks for any assistance.
Breaker.

Do a search in the forum for daphne and mamewah. I don't use daphne, so I can't help you, but I recall others having this issue with daphne and frontends in the past.

I think I had the same problem as you, outlined in this thread:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=52900.msg520982#msg520982

Unfortunately, this thread won't be any help for you.  I ended up going back to version 1.61 on this machine.  If you figure it out though, please let me know.

Thanks ppilot & brophog,

Looks like I'm in the boat as ppilot...

I see two avenues for further testing:

1) fresh vs copied version of v1.62b10
Ppilot, you and I both configured v1.62b10 on a test PC and then attempted to move it to our CABs. In the thread you referred me to, Minwah suggested downloading a fresh copy of v1.62b10 to your CAB and unzipping using WinZip (to avoid any possible corruption to the mamewah.exe file caused by the copying procedure). I'll give this a try (although I suspect you've tried this already as well).

2) Service Pack 1 vs Service Pack 2
My test PC (on which everything works fine) is running XP-SP2 while my CAB is running XP-SP1. There's a slight chance the service pack could be affecting this feature of v1.62b10. I'm not really keen on upgrading to SP2 on my CAB just to test, but I do have a spare harddrive and if I have the time this weekend I'll put a fresh install of XP on it and test the service pack theory.

Thanks for you help - I'll tinker with this issue over the next little while and report back.

Cheers,
Breaker.

Hi all,

After a few days of plugging away I finally got v162b10 of MAMEWAH to recgonize DAPHne as an emulator. I thought I'd post my solution here for the benefit of others who might be using v162b10 of MAMEWAH.

A little background:
I have three partitions on my MAME CAB's harddrive (C, D, E) and have been attempting to install v162b10 on the E partition where all my other acade software resides. This evening I figured, OK, let's try it on 'D' and see what happens. I then copied the ZIP file, uncompressed it, created a 'daphne' folder inside the 'config' directory, fired-up MAMEWAH and BAM!, the 'Select Platforms' options was there! So, I then started looking at what the differences were between the partitions on my machine. After a bit of searching and experimenting I noticed that the E partition did not have the 'Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast searching' option turned on (as the other partitions did). I then turn this option on, tried my earlier v162b10 install and, sure enough, the 'Select Platforms' option was there. I verified that this was indeed the problem by selecting the v162b10 install directory and disabling the indexing option on the folder. This time when I ran MAMEWAH the only options I received were the sound and exit options. That was enough to confirm the solution for me.

I'm not sure what turning on the indexing option does to files in XP but, whatever it is, it has an effect on v162b10 of MAMEWAH.

Based upon Minwah's suggestions to others with similar issues, I have been tinkering with file settings the last few days and, as it turns out, that was the ultimate solution for me as well. I hope this helps out others who might be experiencing the same problem I was.

Thanks to all for your assistance.

Cheers,
Breaker.

Is there a good reason for all of those partitions? With this being primarily a user oriented hobby, you want to make things as easy on yourself and the software as you can. You always have to remember that all of these great frontends, emulators and other tools are primarily user donated and programmed and are not made for every setup possible. Most of the time these things were done for the programmer in mind and then he/she decided to share it with the rest of us.

So my suggestion to anyone getting into this is to make things as absolutely simple as possible to maximize compatibility and make error finding easier.

I agree Brophog.

I must admit, I asked myself the same question when I started trouble-shooting...why the heck did I create so many partitions?!

I do like having two partitions (system/application) because it allows MAME a clean disk space to operate on (independent of systems files and processes) and it can make back-ups easier.

Cheers,
Breaker.

Well son of a gun, you're right.  Thanks, I wouldn't have thought to try that in a million years.
