mk series games are choppy on mame32
« on: August 06, 2006, 09:23:02 pm »
Hey everyone, just starting out here with my mame project, but have a few questions.
Im in the process of building my cabinet, running gameex as a front end, and mame32 as the emulator. Quad stick is on order and im waiting for black friday to buy a 32" lcd monitor, my problem is this.
I have about 1500 roms, with the mk series being my favorite, on my main pc (3.8ghz p4, 4gb ram, 256 g force graphics card, raptor 10000 rpm HD, sb audigy 2 sound card) and my laptop (1.6ghz celeron with 1gb ram, factory sound) all roms play fine, but on my machine im building for my cabinet. I get horribly choppy sound on mk games.
the specs on the cabinet pc are:
1.8 p4, 512 ram, sound blaster card, radeon 256 9700 agp.
These a are bit better specs than my laptop, but the sound is so bad in umk3, its unplayable. Im running xp pro, stripped down, i have all the updated sound card drivers and windows drivers, but no matter what i do, i cant seem to get better sound.
I did try pulling a 2.8 ghz processor from another pc and the sound was much better, but i would probably would need a 3.0ghz to get it perfect.
So what am i doing wrong that a laptop is giving better performace than a desktop with more power!!!

Thanks,

Frank

First, if you are using a front end, you shouldn't be using mame32.  Try regular ol' mame or possibly a mame build optimized for pentium cpus.

Second, are you using the same version of mame on all pcs?  Newer versions tend to run a bit slower.  Try an older version of mame on the cabinet pc.

With the specs you've listed for the cabinet pc, you shouldn't have a problem running the MK series.  I used to use a similarly spec'd pc for MK without slowdown or sound problems.  Again, it may just be that I was using an older version of mame.

all pc's are running the same version of mame32, and i did try the newest, and an older version on mame with no luck, still the same problem.  Its just a weird situation!!!

They are all using the same default game settings for sound and video for all instances?

1. Disable autoframeskip, set frameskip 0.
2. For newer MAME versions you should use better CPU
3. Use older MAME version.
