Ataxx as a coin-op arcade machine?
« on: August 06, 2006, 08:28:00 am »
Another eBay find. This guy has pcb, joysticks, buttons, graphics, and everthing needed to make Ataxx arcade machine, except for the cabinet.

Ataxx is an othello type game, and I wouldn't think a game like that would be found in an arcade.  Maybe something he made himself? I thought it a joke at first.

Yeah, that's a legit kit for cabinet conversions.

Nothing unusual, funny or strange about it.

I guess its just very uncommon.  It ranks a 19 on a scale of 1 to 100, with 100 being the most common and 1 being the least.

It just didn't seem like anything a kid would pay a quarter for.

I've played it in the arcade before, years ago. About as exciting as you would think it is(n't).
$6.75 the hard way-one quarter at a time.

Atari made the conversion kit. We had over two dozen of them on our route (I built every one of them from kits). The only reason my boss bought these kits was that they were cheap (around $900 at the time). Since they were Jamma they were easy conversions. Too bad the game just plain SUCKS!

I think its a fun game.  Othello type games are fun maybe to play on your computer while you're bored. Sortof like Windows solitaire.  I just dont see it as a game played much in arcades.

We used to play this at my local pool hall. It was semi-fun head to head and the computer is challenging at all it's levels. It's about as well done as it can be, the game itself isn't usually what a person plays video games for. I enjoy it, but I can see it's not for everyone.

I enjoyed it the few times I played it, though I certainly wouldn't have gone out of my way to do so.  Not really a great arcade game, though it is fun.  More of a computer / cellphone kind of game.  heh.  I would expect people who liked tetris and klax to like this game.

Those rankings are notoriously bad. Do not rely on those as far as rarity is concerned.

Local JC (junior college) had one for a few years.
