Atari Gauntlet - Ground Up Build
« on: August 05, 2006, 04:00:56 am »
Hey all,

I've started my Atari Gauntlet 4-Player build. Here are some pics:

I'll add more as I complete more of it  :)

Next up I'd like to build a System 1 cabinet, but I don't have any plans  :(
So if anyone has any PLEASE contact me

Hey Steve - lookin good!

You owe us a story! First off - why gauntlet? Also, are you working off plans? Whats your timeline? What kind of controls? Or... are you being mysterious on purpose?!  :)

Ok. I'll try and answer your questions in order:

Why Gauntlet - Well I used to LOVE this in the arcades  ;D I'm a HUGE 80's fan of video games (and music)

I'm working off the plans on the Jakobud site, so I hope I get it right.

I don't have a timeline, but the sooner the better I say  ;)

As for controls, I'm going to use the Happ color coded ones (Yellow, Green and so on)

This is also a dedicated MAME cabinet just for Gauntlet (Might build a Gauntlet II one as well)

I'd love to build a dedicated Marble Madness, Temple of Doom and Peter Pack Rat but I can't find any System 1 cabinet plans.

Also, I plan on building more dedicated cabs in time to come. If I can't find any System 1 plans then either a Juno First or Rolling Thunder cab (once again need plans)

Hope this helps answer your questions

Bit more info.

I'm using 3/4" MDF for the whole cabinet (except for the monitor surround)

I'm going to cover it with melamine and place the artwork on that. Unsure how I am going to mount the joysticks, I might have to route out some of the MDF so they can fit.
Adding T-molding, Perspex or glass and a 21" CRT computer monitor for the display. I'll use a old Pentium III 1Ghz PC for the brains and some good speakers.
Coin-doors will be added too  :)

The 80's is what it's all about.....

I always loved the modern look of the original Gauntlet cabs.  I wish I had built one of these.

I guess there will need to be a "next time"  >:D

Wow. Dedicated Gauntlet. You must have some room available! If it were mine, I couldn't help but stick some other 4 player games in there and 2 player dual stick games (smash TV).

Keep up the good work and documentation.

38.375

Thanks for the kind words guys  :applaud:

Veinman, I'm just about to purchase the artwork from Arcadeoverlays.com and I have the front player/coin art (above the coin door)

Leapinlew, yeah I have a little bit of space  ;)  I could add in more games, but I just want a dedicated cab for now.

Psychotech, the depth is 38.375" and I am in a 4 bedroom house and there is only me and the Mrs  8)

I do plan on building a MAME cabinet with alot of the old games, but for the ones I really liked I am going to build dedicated cabs (as long as I can find the artwork and plans)

What are your plans for the Marquee?  I notice it is offset slightly downwards - is there going to be some kind of art above the marquee?

Also, I think I saw someone selling a Gauntlet CP in vinyl.  I'll see if I can remember where I found it.

Looks great - I can't wait to see it finished.

I've not mounted the marquee block yet as I want to make sure the artwork fits and it's not sitting flush so will come up a bit (might have to trim the wood yet)

I'd be keen as for the CPO if available  :)

Thanks

That's the one!  Thanks NightGod!

...not to mention a STEAL.  $35.00 for that HUGE cp?!?!  I paid $40 for my Bartop's CP Vinyl (18.5" x 8.75" - Kinkos)!

Note: They also have Gauntlet II!

I have been planning on doing a gauntlet cab too.  I was wondering how you were going to do the monitor bezel.  In the original it was a hard plastic one with no glass.  Just wondering?

Im jealous of your progress so far.

I'm going to get the bezel custom made  ;D from plastic, but I am going to cover it with glass.

I did get the plans from the jakobud site.

Also, I've just found an original Peter Packrat  :applaud: ;D :applaud: so I'll be able to make my Temple of Doom and Marble Madness from it

I'll have more pics of Gauntlet up this weekend.

What is a custom plastic bezel cost.  I may be interested in one.  You said you were using a 21" monitor, what brand?   There may be others interested in a monitor bezel that would fit a 21" monitor well.  You might ask around before getting it made.  It may be cheaper to get 10 made than just one.

Mark

No idea on cost as a friend of mine is going to be doing it for me  ;D
As for the monitor, it is a NEC tube.

I'll fins out how much it's going to cost for the Bezel.

If I remember correctly,  the speaker grill was the kind with tiny offset circular holes.  If found a few places online that have what they call perforated sheets which look like what I remember.  If your going to take pictures take some of the back also.  I want to see how you handled the angles on the back. Also close ups of the speaker area, and the monitor bezel would be great.  Did you ever get the plastic bezel made?

When Gauntlet arrived at my hometown arcade in the 80's for the first few months you often had to wait in line to play it or go there later on in the evening. I remember people would often get upset when they died and blame each other, hehe.

Ahhhh!  Where are the pictures?  I think building (and then having) a Gauntlet Cab would be so much fun, so I read this thread with great interest.  I'd really like to see how the cab turned out.
