some crap pics of a cool ship (",)
« on: July 31, 2006, 08:56:17 am »

i had a look at the 'Duyfken' on the weekend. its a replica of a ship that charted part of the australian coast in 1606. it was a dutch scout ship that served in the dutch east indies (indonesia). this replica was built in western australia about 6 years ago. it has since sailed to the netherlands where they were very impressed. LOA is 21 metres and modern crew is 16, back in the day 20. it has two small auxillary motors for manuevering but they are not powerful enough for cruising so sails only on the open sea. my camera battery was getting flat and im a shite photographer anyway but heres a couple of pics. the building to left of the ship is the old customs house which was built in the 19th century sometime. pity it couldnt have moored there as it would have looked nicer (",)

As a Dutchman, I can say: well done down-under !!

Of course, we're not behind you guys:

The "Batavia" is a finished ship that was built in Lelystad, and currently they are building the "7 provincien = Seven Provinces" in that city. This ship has been to Sydney in 2000, but I doubt it sailed there on it's own sails.

Believe it or not, there were 332  people on board in 1628....the ship was only 55 meters long........and we are complaining when we travel for 12 hours in a Jumbo :)

In Rotterdam they are doing a simular project, reconstructing "De Delft":

http://www.dedelft.nl/en/index.html

Both are projects where unemployed people get an opportunity to get working experience and learn a job.

Good thing...

Very cool pics Danny. I have a real thing for wooden sailing ships. Not much opportunity to see one in Oklahoma, alas.

ive seen some bits and pieces of the batavia that were salvaged. it sank off the coast of western australia. they say some sailors survived and that even now there are blue eyed aboriginals in that area! dont know how true that is though. apparently the replica batavia doesnt sail really well...

stingray, maybe you could build something and be the first (",)

and i just remembered this viking long boat that i saw at a medievel festival last year

Keep your eyes on the project announcements board for my BYO pirate ship thread. Maybe that should go in woodworking.
