Firewall Help
« on: July 26, 2006, 09:03:51 pm »
I am trying to access the exceptions tab in my firewall setting.  The problem is, unlike most other XP computers I have used, the Firewall option is not present in my control panel.  I am running XP SP1.  Any ideas how I can get to this?

Upgrade to XP Service Pack 2, which is when the firewall came out :)

Not true, thats just when they automatically turned it on and made a nicer UI for it.  I would recommend upgrading to service pack 2 since it contains a lot of security upgrades, but if your dead set on not installing it, then you can get to it by going to network connections, right click on whatever is your internet access (local area connection, network bridge, etc.) and click on properties,  click the advanced tab (if there is no advanced tab then you didn't select the right internet access, try another one) then click Settings.  That should take you to the firewall menu.

Upgrade to XP Service Pack 2

Upgrading to service pack two is the equivelent of opening an unholy portal to the seventh layer of hell. You computer will become possessed and will tell you that every internet page you visit is the spawn of evil. Oh, and good luck changing the Internet explorer settings, if you dare.  >:D >:D

Then again, SP1 will explode with its over intake of spyware and viral damage.

It's a rock and a hardplace. I'll take sp1.

I hold a royal grudge against windows, but I still use it. I used to use macs in the mid 90's. The thing I miss most is the fact that installation usually could simply mean dragging and dropping files from the cd to the applications folder. Also the fact that i didn't have to worry about spyware/adware/virii/and the OS exploding for no apparent reason. also, there were some sweet games that I miss for the mac.

I think macs started sucking more when they tried to copy windows. but, If i had about 4 grand to throw away, i wouldn't mind a sweet looking mac.

Linux is an excellent concept, and I admire it completely. I just never had the energy or desire to get into it. plus I am still under the delusion that I have a life.

I'm almost speechless.  I regularly use and develop for both platforms, and like them both for different reasons, but the two ideas presented here are lunacy.  OS X copied Windows, eh?  Um, yeah.  Vista, when it is eventually released, is about to almost catch Windows up to where OS X is today.  And 4 grand to get a Mac?  You can get yourself a Mac Mini for $599, or even an iMac for $1299.  Even if you load the iMac up with all the options, it still comes out under 3 grand.  Heck, even the higher end laptops aren't going to run you much more than 2 grand.

Of course, maybe you keep your money in Brazilian Reals or something, in which case, yeah, you might have to spend 4,000 R$ to get one.

Don't have a panic over it dude. I understand that the copy ratio from windows to macs is like 90 to 1. But I seriously had problems getting back into using a mac last year. The new OS had lost its simplicity that I loved so much. It just reminds me of windows and how they have to make everything so complicated. (I left when OS 7 was out, I think its now "OS: Wombat" or somthin)

And I have no interest in a mac mini or imac. I don't like prefab machines, and half the reason why I use a mac is for its film editing and graphic design advantages.

I'll take this one tho  ;D ;D ;D

Pfft-only a TB of storage? What's the point? I've got a TB and have to move junk around and offload as it is. Hoping those 500GB drives come down by this fall so I can drop 2TB into my next machine.
$6.75 the hard way-one quarter at a time.
