Where can I get a piece of wood milled for me?
« on: July 26, 2006, 06:23:55 pm »
I need two shims of any wood that measure EXACTLY 2-3/32" by APPROXIMATELY 13" by APPROXIMATELY 1-1/4" - I know Home Depot doesn't make exact cuts - any ideas on where to get something like this done?  I have a router and jigsaw at home that I've been using but I just don't think I can get the exact uniform thickness that I need the shims to be...

Perhaps a lumberyard, otherwise, look for a millwork place.

Or find a friend with a table saw-cuts like that are easy with a fence.

Check the yellow pages for either suppliers of hardwoods for cabinet shops or just cabinet shops. Either should be willing (for a fee) to saw, or better, plane down the stock you need. You might toss out a feeler on the main forum for a BYOACer with a thickness planer or table saw that would knock out a couple of pieces for ya. I would be glad to do it if you were close.

For what it would cost to have a pro do it he could pick up a decent used table saw and do it himself + have a table saw.

Maybe.

In my area a cabinet shop will usually run a few small pieces through a thickness planer for the cost of a value meal. Course we're pretty friendly round here :)

If a pro would charge enough to pay for a powersaw to mill two sides of a 3 foot 2x4, he's so much a pro as he is a rip-off artist.

It's all about what his time is worth to him.  Pros here don't eff around, they charge you what they would be making per hour at their real job.  Even for something simple.

If they can make enough to buy a table saw in five minutes, or even an hour, they should be retired by now.

I said used table saw, bro.  They can be had in the $50 range.  A pro can make $50/hr.

Ah, valid point, I missed the used part there. Yeah, $50/hr is doable, hell, that's what I charge and people always think I'm undercharging them (which says to me it's time to raise my rates again, even though I did just three months ago).

That said-anyone know of a $50 used table saw for sale in the Chicagoland area? I'd pay that in a heartbeat

This is why I don't live in Mass. Pros here are always willing to help a fella out, because it's the right thing to do. Of course I work in the construction industry, so maybe it's just cause I know the guys. ;)

I still say your best bet is to toss a "help a fella out" post in main. Some byoac'er will come to the rescue and cut the parts for you.
