What OS shell I USe?
« on: July 21, 2006, 02:50:53 am »
Hi, I'm wondering what's the best OS for my cab...
I have a P4 2Ghz with 256 mb ram, Ati 9200SE grafic card...and I want to run a lot of emulators...
I've a Maxtor 80 gb hard drive...and controls are hacked via usb...
what do you suggest? windows 98, 2000, XP?

Without doubt.  Use XP.

Motivation? it's easier to configure? the requested spece on hard drive is higher than 2000...it doesn't slow up the cab?

It is the Fastest Microsoft OS to Boot  (even faster than dos).
It is the more stable
It is the more modern  (all drivers, software, emulator that are coming now, works for it)
It is very customizable and optimizable.
May be it take more space on hard drive than 2000 , but you can always remove what you don't need.

2000 is very good too, but why took 2000  , if you can put XP . It is almost the same core and more modern.

In my cab, i have a amd athlon XP 2000+ , 256mega de ram , hd 40giga , ArcadeVGA.  It boots directly on the Front End  in 11 seconds under XP.

On the same machine ,under dos with Advmenu as frontend , it boots in 15s . (and i have no CD Drive access, if i put the cd driver it tooks 3 seconds more).

1-Remove all application that windows start in background.
2-Stop all windows services you don't need.
3-Uninstall all driver you don't need
4-And put the FE as shell.

My machine is dedicated for my cab so , i have no internet,  no antivirus , nothing.   Just AtomicFE , emulators and required drivers.

If you do only step 1 and 2 , you will see it will be already very faster.   Step 3 and 4 , it just to save1 or 2 second more maximum.

I suppose the speed will depend of your harddrive speed too. But i have not a specially fast hardrive i have something standard.

youki....Why some People don't Recommend WinXP on Slower Computer...LiKe 500 Mhz with 128 Mb Ram...

If we do a Super Tweak in WindowsXP,Don't u think it becomes more Light and smooth as compared with win98....?

Then why not for that Hardware...?
