I have one Red plain JAMMA cab and one Black (Aero Fighters, and Mortal Kombat) they are next in line for MAMEing--these are generic cabs with no side art or anything so don't flame me!

I believe Eddie started with a white or black guitar, striped then painted the opposite color then striped and painted again with Red.

Has anyone ever seen a cab like this and what design elements do you think would be cool on such an undertaking?

A PS2 with Guitar Hero would be cool, but let me know what y'all think...

Besides, Van Halen is SOOOOO 80's!

p.s. Can post pics of existing cab(s) if it will spark ideas.

I think painting the cab like Eddie's black/white/red striped guitar would be cool.  But then again, I have no taste.   ;D

That would be awesome! You could have it start-up with the 5150 music and logos ect. Have the FE themed w/VH. Put a VH logo on the marquee or sides you name it.

Quick, get started so I can copy it!  ;)

I know... I was thinking about totally VHing the thing out with guitar squeals and sound effects for picking games and stuff.

Even doing some Black line Art type stuff for the Floyd Rose and strings and stuff.

and a huge volume knob! that says TONE of course!

Opening with Eruption! Oh yeah!

I was thinking the TONE knob for a real volume knob for the cab volume, but spinner would be awesome!

I actually live over a real arcade in Jersey, the Landlord owner is awesome--I may be able to score some parts from him for the project... hmmmm.

Personally, I prefer themes that express their theme without shouting out "THEME!".

Maybe a cabinet called JUMP! or RUNNING WITH THE DEVIL with the VH logo would be better than a cabinet that said, VAN HALEN on it. Thats just my two cents.

Also... instead of making an arcade game, consider a jukebox? Turn one of those into a jukebox or maybe build a jukebox? I know mine gets a helluva workout - more so than the games.

Good luck and of course, post lots of pics.

Leapinlew has a great suggestion with "Running with the Devil" as the name/marquee.  Match that with the striped paint job, and you're stylin'.

Yup, great theme for a juke or a dedicated Guitar Hero cab..which I've been pondering lately.

Haven't seen anything Van Halen related in cabinet world. I did an Iron Maiden themed one for somebody and I've had a CRUE one on my drawing board for awhile now.

Ha! Look at us talking about Crue, Van Halen, Maiden, and Poision... (hmm, am I the only one talking about Poison?) anyhow... we are all definetly 80's hair kinda guys. I feel sorry for all the kids trying to recapture their youth in 15 years.

They'll look awful silly building BYODDR pads and Usher and Britney themed jukeboxes.

I thought 5150 with the ratty looking electrical tape/vinyl lettering (photoshopped of course) would be a cool logo for the Marquee, maybe a VH logo on the front or sides. Will post a sketch when i get a minute. I am a guitar player so I really want a guitar feel for it--Thinking of a Grill Clothed Front with a Marshall logo or something.

Some one stop me...

I thought of the Song specific theme concept--and the various Devil themes, but I am a Pastor now, so I didn't even consider the Shout at the Runnin' with the Devil thing--awesome riff in that song though. I just don't like giving the Devil anymore publicity...

For me it was always about the guitar. Singer? What singer!

Well, given that it is a Van Halen cab, and especially since it is 5150 themed at that, it seems far more fitting that it should be a Peavey logo on there. ;)

[EDIT]
Though I guess for time period authenticity, Marshal would be plenty accurate.

Sounds awesome!  There are a lot of tutorials online on how to make a "Frankenstrat".   Basically, start with a white base coat, then stripe it with pinstriping tape and electrical tape, then paint it red.  Let it dry, peel off the tape, and re-apply some electrical tape.  And for some authentic markings, put a few cigarette burns in the thing with a Camel unfiltered.  Good luck!!!

Doing a 1984 cab would make sense, but 5150 wasn't even a Van Halen album.   :lame:

Bite cher tounge Kremmit.  ;) Yes 84 did rock, but 5150 was probably one of my VH favorites. (Actually it was my first concert too). Actually, those are my two favorite VH albums. Why did they have to go ang get sucky (I am referring to the post Hagar days) That song on the twister album was about the last good thing I heard out of them.

Back to the thread. Don't make the strings part of the art, put real strings on it. It is a cabinet... You have a huge wooden box. With strings on it, you WOULD hear them ring if you tightened them right. You could tune them to a chord. Sure would go out of tune with humidity and all, but doesn't take long at all to tune a cabinet.

Also, I love the idea of a Floyd Rose on there, but use a real one. Then on the underside, place a cherry microswitch and make the trem be your cabinet on switch. My hunch is that there are enough nearly dead guitars with FR Trems that are still in decient condition, you could probably get one for cheap. Just re paint it shiney black. It does not have to be music worthy. Not sure who said it, but guitar Volume knob for cabinet volume was a great idea.

as a side note, I believe that when eddie, went over to peavey is about the point in time when it started to go down hill. Go with the marshall. Heck you could mount 4 12's in there and make a loud as $#!+ cabinet. You get blown up in asteroids and your wall gets taken out (Michael J Fox...Back to the future).

Believe me, I have all that stuff running around in my head--a real floyd and strings would get lost in the design--the cabinet is an existing full size cab and the whole point is to retrofit/repaint the existing into something really cool.

I was thinking of having a real amp functionality in it juist for giggles.

As for the 5150 Van Roth vs. Van Hagar debate --my 5150 idea was always about the GUITAR not the albums/singers/etc.--as far as significant events in the Arcade world and Van Halen Collide--1984 would be a logical theme as well--but the main thing for me is that red white black paint job, and some cool small accents that would really set it off.

And I agree about the 1984 album cover--no way would I ever put the 5150 Atlas cover on anything--whew!

Anyway, back to the thread---I was also thinking of other typical Rock-N-Roll stuff like working the images of backstage passes in there--maybe in the screen bezel area. Any ideas for details you creative types think would be cool--and subtle is good, I want to really put thought into this so that true afficianados will go, "oh Yeah!!"

Did Eddie not have that guitar pre-Hagar?

Regardless, Van Hagar is teh sux.  Nothing against Sammy himself, it's just that Eddie forgot how to play after Dave left, for whatever reason.

I think he had it for a while(yes pre hagar). Not sure when it came out. There is a guy at my company who bought one of Edie's custom yellow and black design he used way long ago. this guy had oodles o money and bought it for a sick (too high) price.

Kremmit, go check out OU812. That has some crazy stuff on it. AFU was awesome. He got into that whole disonant (sp?) chord stuff. Very out of the box for the time. the F.U.C.K. album started to sound like other people. That is when I drew the line. Last VH Album I bought (my first CD ever). Actually sold it.   :P
