So what's the end all be all for NDS backups/homebrew?
« on: July 14, 2006, 08:29:05 pm »
I've seen a little bit of discussion as of late concerning the DS and being able to play DS games from a blank GBA cart, something about a passkey and also flashing has come up.

Is there a "xbox-scene" for GBA?
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

I'm interested in this too.  My birthday's coming up and I wouldn't be surprised if I get a DS Lite from my wife.

I've got a dslite with a m3 mini sd, passcard2.

I love the dslite, and would love my m3 except for the following reasons.

1. the card slot is in the front. This may be a plus to most people, but I've had the card come out accidently, and my children are 6 and 8 so thats not a good thing.

2. The menu, I still don't like it even from the original movie player.  I want to boot up to the game list, not the main menu, then hit a, then select game, hit a, then hit a to load the save game.

3. Cost! the m3 is still a pricey beast! if you are only going ds games the m3pro does all the ds software but loses gba compatibility for less money.

Later,
dabone

Do a search for DS Homebrew.  I've been wanting to make a couple programs that would be perfect for the DS and have been doing alot of research.  (Like a dart scoreboard for use with my steel tip dartboard).

You need two things, a way to run unsigned code and access to that unsigned code.  That's what supercard/passkey are about, allowing unsigned code.  Well, that fills up your DS game slot.  So to access apps people use flashcarts, CF or SD adaptors, whatever in the GBA port.

However, this isn't cheap.  The cheapest combo I could find was about $75 for a passcard3 and supercard sd adaptor.  As others suggested, M3 products are the best and a M3 paddcard3, SD or CF adaptor, SD or CF card, USB adaptor for your computer, will run you more than the cost of a ds lite.

If I had a choice between the DS and PSP has my first handheld, I'd go with the PSP 1st then the DS. I find the PSP to be a better gaming experience and the screen is shiny and bright!

While the PSP is a quality system, the games are lacking and its pricier.

TO answer the original question, I have an M3 and it does everything I could want it to do.  Play emulators\home brew\DS and GBA roms\music\video\text files\jpegs, etc etc.

Not to get into a PSP/DS debate as I love both systems A LOT, but the game situation for the PSP is tons better nowadays.  There are a lot of quality games on the system IMO, and the whole "its gots no games" argument doesn't fly anymore.

That said, the great Nintendo games can't be touched by what's on the PSP, but the games are there now... it just took WAY too long, and they aren't coming out frequently enough.  There are plenty of games to warrant a purchase however.

It is pricier though, even if you factor in an M3 for your DS vs some ProDuos. No denying that.
