renting an XBOX 360 - game suggestions?
« on: July 11, 2006, 05:54:07 pm »
My buddy and I are renting an XBOX 360 tomorrow for a week.

We were hoping to get games that we're either playing against each other, or cooperatively.  At least one first person shooter.  Probably no sports.  Any suggestions?

Call Of Duty 2 and Oblivion are the two games that have kept me entertained since I bought mine a couple of months ago.

I second Call of Duty 2.  Also, you may want to check out Perfect Dark Zero, another FPS.  If your interested in racing games I would suggest either Burnout Revenge or Project Gotham Racing 3.  Finally Dead or Alive 4 is a great fighting game if you want to beat each other up.

Thanks for the suggestions.

We couldn't settle on two...

chose:

Call of Duty 2 - Got addicted at the store kiosk.  No brainer.

Perfect Dark Zero - the original one was a ton of fun.  We wanted a game that we could do battle mode.

Hitman: Blood Money - the commercials look awesome.  It's only one player which might kinda suck cause I don't think either of us wants to watch the other play.

I'll report back.

Oblivion seems like the worst choice possible.  You definitely need more than a week for that game (disclaimer: I've never played or even seen it).

You need a week to figure out if you like a game or not?  I was hooked in a couple of hours.  It's an RPG played through an FPS perspective so I thought it might fit the bill for this guy.  Also, Oblivion may possibly have the highest average review ratings of any 360 game out at this time.

My recommendations were based on my experience with the system so far.  Those two games are what I am currently playing, although I also have PGR3 and Blazing Angels.

Agreed, oblivion is either hit or miss after about 2 hours of play. Its painfully slow at the beginning but it picks up right after the "how to play" intro.

I liked it alot. i havent played it much after the first few weeks of release, but i tend to put games down for months on end then pick them back up. WoW consumes me :(

I think Perfect Dark Zero has co-op play..... that's a good choice.  I hear it's fun too.  Let us know how the co-op is if you get a chance, please.

Not sure CoD2 is much fun with just two players unless you have a Live account.  I just finished the single player part and had a blast.  I'm looking forward to CoD3.

Oblivion is good but you might need time to get into it.  Sure looks pretty..... well except for the women in it..... ;)

Have fun!

After Day 1:

The system cost a lot more to rent then I was told on the phone.  that sucks.  The HD cable was broken, so had to use the crappy cable.

I thought COD2 was cooperative play, but I guess that's for Live.  So that sort of sucks.

Hitman was fun.  We were playing the easy level and just kept saving and passing the controller back and forth when we dies.  Worked out well.

We played cooperative PDZ.  It was fun until we got the level where you fly those little remote control orbs around... what's with that sound?  I commented that "this is the sound of me losing my mind."  It was brutal.  The system got turned off after that.

In general... we were wondering how kids figure this crap out.  I mean, we're both 27, grew up on NES and Coleco.  Out of the loop.  It's only going to get better.  I'll let you know.

It's too bad you're not playing the games in HD.  Without 720p or 1080i the 360 is pretty much just an XBOX.  :-\

PGR3 is still best racer to date on 360 IMHO. And yes, COD2 is a great game for it as well. Really looking forward to this fall and holidays to see what wicked new games we get for it  :applaud:

Big bummer..... like somunny said it really needs to be played in HD.....

I don't think COD2 has co-op play at all.  Unless you consider team deathmatch co-op.

Cool.... maybe my next acquisition.....

Ugh.... maybe I'll hold off till it hits the bargain bin.....

I've got 10 more years on you so I'm more of a 2600/Intellivision/Coleco diehard..... and I think the same thing.  I recently played the demo for FIFA 2006 and after looking at all the friggin' button combos to do different things I was beginning to feel..... old.....

Yeah, I mean that even if he's two hours into it and decides it's the greatest game he's ever played he's still not going to have a 360 in a week.  So since a week isn't long enough to play through the whole game he'd just maybe get a fifth of the way through it and then have to return it.  Even if he decides to buy a 360 down the road he'd still have to start Oblivion all over because he presumably doesn't have his own memory card.  Like I say, I've never played Oblivion, but if it's like other RPGs I just figure it's not worth starting if there is no possibility of finishing it.

Day 2 Update:

Good news: we got the HD cable to work.  There was some settings on the xbox that needed to be adjusted.

I played some COD2 solo.  I love that game.

My buddy downloaded a walkthrough for Hitman.  We played it a bit and gave up.

We played PDZ a bunch and then started cooperative play.

It was all fun (we even got past that level that made me want to slit my throat), until my controller got disconnected.

Oh wait...  the dog chewed the cord.

So now there is only one controller.  This whole thing is starting to become a costly endevour.

Yeah, Xbox 360 @ 720P is really a beautiful thing.  I actually held out on buying an HDTV until I got the 360, and all the games I've played look fantastic.  If you can use the VGA instead of the component cables, it'll look even better (save your HDMI for the PS3 if Sony ever drops the price, even if MS releases a cable).

Oblivion is a great game - the more you put into it the more you'll enjoy it, but you should try it just to enjoy the graphics (not the women, lol).

DOA4 - stunning how good it looks.  I just wish it played better as it quickly turns into a rock paper scissors game.  Fun with 2 people but you'll probably get pissed off playing the computer at length.  MS needs to get Namco and Sega putting fighters on this box.

PDZ - Looks good, but it felt like it should've looked better.  Fun game though.

If you've got the x360 on the net, download the demo for Lost Planet.  Wow, felt like I was watching Starship Troopers on Planet Hoth watching a buddy play, and it was fun when I got my shot.

The FNR3 demo was a lot of fun too - I love how the blood just shoots across the screen with a good punch.

I'd give you more opinions on good games, but Oblivion is taking up too much playtime for me to get to them.

Burnout is the best racing game on the 360 Nivo :)

Anyway, I currently have PDZ, GRAW, Burnout, MLB2k6, and NCAA 07.  I don't play PDZ anymore.  I think it is fun and now with the new update to the bots multiplayer might be interesting again.  It reminds me of hte n64 version.  Alot of people are saying it is crap but I think they are comparing it to today's FPS standards where the FPS needs a good storyline.  I haven't touched GRAW single player since I beat it.  Multiplayer is the bread and butter for that game.

Since you rented I assume they rent out the core system?  Bleh.  You need the hdd to get the updates.  Pretty much every game has a patch or downloadable content.  And oyu can download the demos then.  Many of the demos are local multiplayer :)  Also many of the Arcade games are local multiplayer.
