Hi guys,
I'll just preface this by saying that I'm usually an extremely easy-going guy. I generally let things slide, and just roll with things as they occur. Today, however, I found myself extremely aggrivated by what happened, so I almost consider it my duty to let you all know about my bad experience. This will not only be theraputic to me, but will also serve to let you know how UPS treated a customer today.
I had a router bit that was due to arrive to my door today. My wife took the day off work for other reasons, but since we had a minor accident with our car last night, I decided to take the time off as well to get some repair quotes around town. This meant that I also had the luxury to be at the house for the delivery. Sure enough, later on in the day I saw the UPS truck arrive. I saw the guy scramble around in the back a bit, then I saw him get back in the seat and drive off again.
I was a bit confused, so I checked the online package tracker thing that they have. It read:
07/10/2006 6:01 A.M. OUT FOR DELIVERY (This is good!)
07/10/2006 12:01 P.M. THE RECEIVER REQUESTED A HOLD FOR A FUTURE DELIVERY DATE. UPS WILL ATTEMPT DELIVERY ON DATE REQUESTED;DELIVERY RESCHEDULED (This is NOT good)
now seeing as I never called them and rescheduled for another date, I called the shipping office and explained the situation. The woman was very helpful and explained to me that I will be receiving a call from an ottawa UPS representative within the hour... That cheered me up a a bit...
...until I talked with the Ottawa rep. She explained to me that the reason why he just drove off was because they forgot to put my package ON the truck in the morning. Based on that nugget of information, I thing they should have changed the tracking status from "THE RECEIVER SCHEDULED A HOLD....." to "OOPS. WE

UP."
"No Problem" I said... Just grab the package and I'll see him back here soon, then?
She says no, that it's not that easy since the package would now be stored in a huge bin with "like, about 3000 other packages. Tee Hee" (I kid you not).
I explain to her that it was arranged for someone to be home today for that package (my wife and I both work) and neither of us would be around the next day when it arrived. I even left a bit of silence on the line, waiting for some sort of apology from her..... Nope, none... Just stunned silence while I assume she was trying to process the gravity of the situation. So after a silent moment or two, I ask if I could just have the address changed to my work address, may as well have it shipped there instead while I'm at it.
No, she says, because apparently due to the overwhelming volume of paperwork required to change one silly address within the same city, it would take 2 days for that change to process, and she assured me that she wanted to see me receive my package within the week. Wow, thanks for lookin' out for me, sweetheart.

Well then, how about I just have the delivery guy leave my package in the garage (or mailbox) for me? That would be the best option of them all. It's a router bit, the box would be tiny! Oh no, she says, that won't work since I ordered the part from the USA (I'm in Canada) and I would have a fee to pay when I get my package, so I have to be there to sign in person for that.
At this point I just say "Ok, so how about explaining to me what my options ARE at this point".... She replies that she'll leave a note for the early morning person and "HOPEFULLY if the morning person gets the message, she can leave my package aside tomorrow so I can pick it up after work myself".....
So at this point, as far as UPS goes, I have inconvenienced myself to take time off work so I would be there when a package arrives, to which it didn't. then after trying to compromise, I'm left with only one option, basically, which is to pick up my item at their pickup location, inconveniencing myself even more... Oh, and this is apparently *IF* the morning person happens to read a post-it note telling her to set my package aside before it goes on the truck. Otherwise I may end up waiting even longer.
Now my wife has had trouble with UPS in the past, and she always warned me against using them. Usually I try not to, but in some cases its just unavoidable. Especially when dealing with companies in the US shipping to Canada. I have to agree with her now... This will be the 4th package I've received from the US (via UPS) within the past few years, and EVERY one of them has been messed up in some shape or form. I've pretty much had enough, hence my rant to all of you.

I'm hoping that I'll be able to have my shipping costs waived for all of this inconvenience. When I (hopefully) go pick up my item tomorrow, I'll try to get that to happen, but to be honest I'm not overly optomistic about it.
If anone else has any similar experiences, let's just form a support group.
