Lawn mower storage
« on: July 06, 2006, 02:19:00 pm »
I want to buy a gas mower off a neighbor, but have no shed yet, and no garage. Can a mower be stored outdoors?

Mine too.  My farmer friends yell at me because it's a John Deere, and it deserves better treatment :blah:,  but the JD can hack it.

Dealer recommended I take the battery out during the winter and store it somewhere warm.  I don't listen to him.  Bought my first battery in 5 years this spring.

If you really care, buy a cover.  It will be fine.

How does it still work?

I throw it in the garage, disconnect the battery, drain the fuel, and cover it, and in the spring I lube all the wheels, change the oil, spark plug and air filter. I live in the midwest and we can have some pretty severe winters. Do you guys all live in the deep south or something?

I live in Indiana.  Not too much snow, but we get cold.  Not DrewKaree cold, but cold.

I don't do any of the recommendations either, MC.  I care less than you!

If you leave it outside eventually some animal will nest in it.  Plus you'll end up with water in the carb and it will have to be cleaned out.

Basically, it will survive, but not nearly as long as if you garaged it.  Just like your car.

It won't be outside for winter. I'll have the shed built by then. I was just concerned about it getting rained on.

mine starts up fine after each winter..... I live in the mountains of NC so we get a fair amount of snow covering it during the winter.... rain doesn't bother it ... the paint job still looks good...

ass you can see... it's been housed outside in the elements for 5 years and still looks good too.....

if its a push type mower, dont leave it in the rain. water will get in the fuel tank. throw a tarp over it or something...

I occasionally remember to put my lawn mower in the garage for the winter, but most times it ends up sitting outside under a big pine tree-I put an old cat litter pan (cleaned out, obviously) over the top of it and secure it with bungee cords, but that's mostly to keep the tree sap off of it. Most I've ever had to do was change a spark plug.
$6.75 the hard way-one quarter at a time.
