Any byoac fantasy football this year?
« on: July 01, 2006, 04:37:55 am »
Count me in if drew or anyone has one going. What would a fantasy game be like without the "NFL Expert in house".  8)  :applaud:

Prolly sometime soon.  Chad started it up the first year, I got the second year.  Go set us one up.  We always seem to have enough to fill one league, and just change the number of teams if we don't.

Hey, if you all end up doing a league and have the space, I'd love to join in.  What sort of league do you do?  Draft/auction?  TD only/yardage?

In fact, if it's just a matter of someone taking the initiative and setting it up, I'd be happy to take the ball and run with it, if you'll pardon the pun.  I assume you've already got a core group of people that have played in the past?

Sounds good.

Set the sucker up.

Say, 8 - 10 teams?  Autopick draft?

In the past, have you all used a free site like Yahoo, or have you chipped in a few bucks for a premium site?  Can someone let me know what scoring and rules you've used?

With regard to the autodraft thing, I'd personally prefer to do an online draft spread out over the course of a few days or a couple of weeks that would allow you to automatically rank players and auto-select them if you'd like rather than a straight autodraft.  Frankly, I've not been real pleased with the computer's ability to pick for me -- one year it selected 2 tight ends before it selected a single running back, which pretty much ended my season right out of the gate.  I know I'm new to the party here and am not in a position to take a strong stand on anything, but if the plan is really to do an autodraft, I'll probably just politely take a pass.  I realize that an online draft requires a bit more time and effort, but I really do think it is worth it in the long run, b/c managers tend to be more engaged with a team they've actually selected in my experience.

Thoughts?

IIRC, it has been Yahoo, autodraft, and no money.  Yahoo allows you to prerank players and then drafts based on your selections (or defaults if you made none).

Basically, it's a little to no work league.  I started the tradition, Drew carried it last year, I say let Speedbags admin this year.

Yahoo is cool for me.  Its a nice set up.  Plus my other league will be Yahoo so I only have to pay for the Stattracker thing one time this way.  :)

Edit:  the Yahoo free option is plenty good.

You can rank your players with an autodraft league.  Its a little bit more of a pain in the smurf though.

Well, since it's no money, I'm cool with the autodraft.  Count me in if there's space.

Free Yahoo league works great for 99% of the leagues out there, especially just for fun/bragging rights leagues.

Here ya go.  It let us use the same league settings, so setup was simple as all get out.  Everything's the same as last year, for those of you who weren't here last year, hit the URL after signing up for a team.  12 teams needed, and I believe I have 2 other spots taken, so we need 9 more owners.  Pre-rank your players prior to the draft so that it's a reasonably decent draft for yourself.  I've got to change the draft status to "ready" and it won't let me until our league is full, and I don't plan to change it even if we're full until Labor Day or later since it's an autodraft to allow folks enough time to pre-rank players.  Grab a team while they're available, and good luck!

League URL:  http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/f1/152800
League ID:  152800
League Name:  BYOAC
League Password:  ImNasshat

Yeah, I saw that when I sent shardian an invite.

For anyone who wants to join up, you don't need an invite, you just need to use the info a few posts up.  The invite is only needed if you can't sign up that way, like Chad was unable to do so.

Seems to be filling up pretty quickly this year too!

Can I let my 11 year old kid play? (I warned him there would be a lot of smack talk).

Invite sent!  Sign up, I believe we're full up.  I've gotta make a call tonight to see if the last 2 spots are actually going to be taken.  I think they may have been having the same problems as everyone else.  Dweebsor, I'll let you know by Monday of next week if your kid can join in.  If the teams are taken, obviously not, but if they're still open, I'll let y'all know what's going on

Also, everyone who's in already needs to be aware of something, and to let me know if you guys want to change it for this year.  Check this link for details and discussion: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=55673.0

So as I have no idea about your football nor how to play fantasy football - would it be easy for me to pick it up?  Does it require a bit of time to get it all set up and manage the team each week?

I've never played either, but it is pretty simple: every week, pick a player for each position from your stable of players whom you think will produce results the best on the field. You get points for different things. If your team earns more points then the other guy, you win.

I kind of did this when I was a kid with baseball cards using the stats from the back...you know...like we all did before the internet. ;D

Tommy, we went over this last year, so bringing up the idea of betting cash has been explained to you.  I have no problems with giving you a team to match up and compare against the Giants, but I have no need to gamble with you in order to enjoy discussing the subject.  I believe Chad has laid out his opinion on gambling quite well also, since I'm aware of the fact that he DOESN'T.

You're like my brother-in-law.  You can't enjoy something without adding the excitement of throwing money at it.  Do you really enjoy football that much, or is it that you have more ways to gamble that makes it enjoyable to you?  I have no such need.  Even if I win, it takes away from the enjoyment for me.  It's why I'm a commissioner for the "for-cash" leagues I'm in.  If I had to pay for my teams, I simply wouldn't play in those leagues.

I don't like gambling as a concept, but mostly in this type of situation, I don't like mixing friends and money.

Money always makes things less fun.  Complicates them as whenever money is involved it immediately becomes the main focus of most people involved.

I don't mind gambling....as long as it is in a nickel slot machine, or betting the same dollar back and forth on a 50/50 chance (insert event here), or lastly, a $5 office pool. These "minimalist" gambling things give the enhanced feeling of fun, and noone really loses out because you actually get entertainment out of it for your money. I had a good ol' time watching the Superbowl this year with my $5'er riding on it. (I won $100 after the first quarter, yippee!)
Anything greater than that, and it is no longer fun, but risky/scary.

I don't think I would consider putting up a few bucks on this league to be "problem gambling." I wouldn't object to it, but if it will be a problem with anyone at all, then it should be left out.

That's the point.  I don't play around with a soft limit like that.  I just don't gamble.  It doesn't add anything to an experience for me so why bother?

To me it makes guys who like to talk maybe not talk so much.. it's easy to talk when you have nothing to lose.

I did forget about you guys not wanting to bet last year,  thats fine then.

What about 30 bucks a person x 12 teams.

1st place - 200
2nd place -  100
3rd place -  60

It would be a small amount to lose and still potentially a nice prize.

It's an autodraft league.  That means you're stuck with whatever yahoo gives you based on the rank you give each player, and where that player sits when it comes around to your turn to draft.  There's ABSOLUTELY NO WAY to know how your team is going to turn out.

To throw ANY money at this is foolishness, as it's a stone cold gamble that you won't be saddled with a dog of a team.  This is JUST for fun, and any and all money wagered will be on the side between people who wish to do it.  Take this as putting it down in stone.  I will not be putting ANY money on this league.  Chad will not be putting any money on this league (I think it's safe for me to speak for him on this).  I only need to reiterate what was said before me: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I would but many guys don't like to bet as you've seen by some posts, if we all agreed i would but it will never happen.

I say make it atleast 5 bucks to make it more fun. Surely that's reasonable and not much risk.

I have no problem with people making a voluntary pool or side bets or anything.  I have no issues with other people gambling.  I won't participate, though.  Bet away, doesn't bother me.  I don't see why every participant has to be in a pool before it can happen.

To hell with it.  This is supposed to be a "just for fun" league and all of the drama over if we should or should not have a friendly wager is quickly taking the fun out of it for me.

Lets just keep on with the no money and drop the subject.  I just figured people would be willing to gamble a few bucks just for laughs.

P.S.  If I sound a little petulant it's because I just got home from a 12 hour shift and I'm a bit tired.

So go ahead.  Why does it require 100% participation?

I would really like you to explain to me what the harm would be in betting 5 bucks in a byoac fantasy football contest? If you go through all the trouble of entering the game, watching the draft and setting up your roster... can you not afford $5.00?

Saying betting makes it less fun or whatever your excuse may be be won't cut the cheese.

I just can't believe you have never bet on something at some point in your life. IF it means that much to you to not bet i respect that but please give a detailed response that makes sence.

It might help to re-read dweebsor's post.  Money is being talked about.  Some aren't going to bet, be it whatever reason isn't understandable to others.  It's now understandable to dweebsor that money is quickly taking the fun out of it.  The reverse of that situation is to have those who want to bet happy, while those who don't want to bet aren't happy if they were to throw money at it.

You've also ignored Chad's very real point of there not needing to be 100% participation to achieve what you want to achieve.

It's getting silly that you're contradicting yourself tommy, but you're not even seeing it.  "What's the harm?", then you go on to question something that's never been the issue (what he can or can't afford), as if the problem is the dollar amount.  Then you tell him his excuse doesn't "cut the cheese", and further ask him to explain himself (well, if his explanation won't cut the cheese, what's the point?)

What's the harm?  The harm is that you've already started to show some of the things that happen when betting amongst people.  The harm is that you've continued to act as if the problem is the money rather than the personal decision not to gamble.  Would you be badgering someone who doesn't want to smoke or drink alcohol to "just have one" as well?

First of all i was wanting him to post, not you. Second, all he's ever said was he dosen't bet with no reason other then he dosen't bet.

If you really think my comment about him not being able to afford it was a real statement you're a fool.

How the hell can you compare an online game where guys compete and "normally" would bet to trying to convince a guy to smoke? That is not a fair comparison by any stretch.

If the guy dosen't want to bet thats fine as i've stated in another post, all i asked was for him to explain what the problem was with it. If he dosen't want to answer on why he won't bet thats up to him, he dosen't own me an explanation.

I also don't see how having a conversation on betting would be a problem and for you to use my question as an example of why betting can cause trouble.

That right there is a pretty good description of why I don't.  I avoid involving money in a lot of social areas.  It is simply not worth it.  Whenever money is involved, in anything, it becomes the primary focus of most people.  I join fantasy football to play fantasy football and focus on fantasy football.  I could give a ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- about money here and clearly it has become the most important element in this league already.

It's actually very fair and very reasonable.  It is not the case with me, my objections are simple preference, but gambling can become an addcction just as strong as alcohol or nicotine.  Trying to goad someone into a bet, when they refuse, isn't all that different than goading someone you don't know into a drink.

I tell you what... you want to start a pool, I have zero objections.  Whatever your entry fee I will donate the same amount towards BYOAC maintenance and remain  outside of the pool.

You were talking to him, but you may as well be talking to me, because I feel the same way. I'm not gonna bet.  If you pestered Chad like this, there's no reason for me to believe you wouldn't do the same to me if Chad, for some reason, DID decide to throw money at it.  I'm just as much a "target" as he is.

Why aren't you starting a league or a side pool for those who want to throw money at it?  Is it just that you want to throw money around without all the hassle of actually working to make it happen?

I'm done explaining things you can't grasp, and thankfully Chad beat me to the post.  I have but one thing to point out, and I'm done with this thread:
Quote

If the guy dosen't want to bet thats fine as i've stated in another post, all i asked was for him to explain what the problem was with it.

You're full of shite.  If it's "fine", then any reason given thus far would MORE than "cut the cheese", and they HAVE been given, you simply don't think they're reasonable, which has nothing to do with them already being told to you.  You've PROVED you don't believe they "cut the cheese" You can try to soften it six ways to Sunday, but you've already let your theories be known.  For anyone who doesn't feel the same way you do, they're nuts, and you've said as much too.

Good luck to everyone this year, and I'll start a separate thread tonight or tomorrow for when the draft will be.  GG will be taking the last spot if he hasn't already, so we'll have 14 teams, largest league yet!
