I hope they're at least somewhat useful.  I'd hate to have 40  486's sitting in my garage haha.

You going to sell some of them?  Make a fort?

That's obnoxioius.  I hate CRTs.  I've got so many of them and I can't give them away fast enough.  They take up so much space.  As for the computers, I'd get rid of those as fast as I possibly could.  Maybe you can go to local church groups and ask them to put out the word that you've got some PCs you can donate to some families in need.  I really wouldn't have been very happy to come home to that mountain.

Dude can part them out and sell them here for MAME folks.  He'd make a little cash with the only real hassle being testing if he wanted to do that or disposing of the cases.

Donating old PCs is a ---smurfing--- nightmare.  You have to build them, put the OS in, update the OS, and then the end users will harrass you forever about supporting ten year old Win98 boxes.  That you gave away free.

CRTs that work can easily be passed along via Freecycle.

hell I wouldn't complain a bit.... I'd be happy to take all that old stuff... I'm sure I could find many good uses for alot of it....

and I actually prefer CRTs compared to LCDs....

I prefer CRTs too.  Much better picture and you can't write on many LCD screens with a dry erase marker.

That's a lie.

You can write on LCD screens with a dry erase marker.  It's erasing it that's the problem.

The new LCDs using the brand new version of the HDMI spec (with the deep black, etc.) are finally surpassing CRTs in terms of picture quality.  But I much prefer LCDs in spite of the inferior picture because my eyes don't get nearly as tired looking at an LCD screen for long periods of time.  I always feel like I haven't been blinking nearly enough when I use a CRT for a long time.  Also, of course, they take up a lot less space which is nice.  And as a network admin supporting about 100 users spread out between multiple offices, there's something to be said for not having to lift the damned things.  I've got a couple of 10 year old 21 inchers that must weigh 85 pounds.  That's heavy enough as dumb bells or something, but when it's something big and awkward that has to be held out in front of you it's back breaking.

And so on . . .

first of all build a fort.

second use the monitors and pcs to play games in your fort.

third did i mention build a fort.

keep in mind a fort.

really part them out hds can be useful, cd roms can be used for spinners, sound cards for dos based cabs, and power supplies for powering stuff.

I'm in a similar position... I have to dispose of about 20 Athlon 600's and a dozen 15 and 17 inch monitors.  The PC's are hardly worth even parting out.  What's going to take forever is doing a secure wipe of each drive... *sigh*

600mhz is a useable speed IMO.  You could use it as a classics machine with little trouble.

I could actually use one for my cocktail project if you're looking to give em away  :P

Agreed.  I could use an Athlon 600 in my next setup, the 450 I have won't run fighters well.

SithMaster: drill is only good if you don't want to use the drives again.

Yeah, 600 is a usable speed; in fact, one of these systems ran my first MAME cabinet.  But they're hardly worth the effort to ship.  Packing materials, boxes and shipping would cost more than the things are worth...

Chad was right when he posted that up there.

Find the local Freecycle group in your area www.freecycle.org and post an offer with some details.  You'll soon be overwhelmed with e-mails asking when they can pick one (or more) of 'em up.  My guess is that it should take you less than a week to get rid of all of them.

Chris, if you were in my area, I'd take 3 of them off your hands.  Those are great boxes for gramma and grampa to surf the 'net with and check their e-mails.

Personally, I would part them and sell them off here for MAME hardware.  Cheap motherboards/power supplies/hard drives/older ram are useful in this community.  Especially if any of the video chips are among the native 15khz capable sort.

I've got a few of those HP Vectra machines...

The problem I had with them was hooking up an ipac the machine would beep beep when a few controls were pressed and run choppy for a few seconds.

The picture's funny though. It looks like all thsoe computers need to fit in that arcade machine. I just gave away a ton of junkers that were P1's -P3's. It's easier to give them away than try to donate them or pay to have them recycled.
