I was out playing my machines after having moved them around and had just booted up one of my dedicated cabs (Guitar Freaks, no MAME or anything). The machine has about a 1-2 minute boot process, so I started playing another machine while it was doing so. In the middle of the boot process the screen suddenly (like, one second it was fine, the next it wasn't) got bright and wavy. The graphics were still present and fairly stable-looking, but the previously black background was now a medium grey and was rolling (perhaps a half-dozen bars rolling up the screen, with every third bar being distorted). I very quickly powered it down and flipped off everything else. Waited a bit and then flipped it back on - it looked the same. I let it complete the boot process but the screen but it didn't change back to normal. Everything is off for now, and I figure I'll check it again in the morning but I'm not too confident.
Did I blow a capacitor or something? Given the way it looks I'm guessing that's what happened, but I've not seen one go immediately like that before.
I'm not sure the monitor model off hand (it was late so I closed everything up), but it isn't terribly old - 1999 or so. The only things that were different from before was that I had two machines on at once in that room, and they were closer together than they had been before (like they would have been in a normal arcade). I also recently re-grounded the GF machine but it had run fine after that. Would any of those factors have caused the issue?
