I have a P4 1.5Ghz with Avga card and jpac. Windows is manageable with a 640x480 res but some of my games roll the screen badly. Ive tried using both the mame res tool or avga res tool but I still have same results. I tried selecting to remove non-60hz but all the inis that are created (which are stored in the mame directory) all say auto. I cant seem to change this.
I select where my mame exe is and also my mame.ini is and my rom directory is and then generate lists but it still rolls on some games. Other games roll and then next time I boot up they work ok. However I can never get pacman to play properly it just rolls.
Do I need to delete all the inis created before trying again?
Also, what is the best res to set all the games too and how do I do this?
Im using a normal aracde monitor.
Im pulling my hair out!!!! (SFII sometimes rolls, othertimes is fine - whats going on and how do I change the auto to a decent res that everything can share?)

Cheers

Are you using mamewah?
Delete all the ini files and try again. Make a separate folder in your mame folder just for the game ini's. Follow the instructions closely and you will get it to generate the right resolutions per game. Check on a game per game basis (use the mamewah res tool and follow instructions) . Delete all the non 60 Hz modes (with RefreshForce) like you said along with the resolutions which are not supported by your mon. Also make sure that if no good resolution is found, mame sets your game to 640*480*60 hz @32 bit color with hwstretch 1. I had the same issues and going through the Retroblast article http://www.retroblast.com/articles/monitor.html as well. It has a lot of helpful info.

If this does not sort you out, can you show a copy of your mamepp.ini? It might also be that you have a problem here.

It might also be that you have a problem with your monitor...which I hope you don't

Im sure my monitor is fine as jamma boards play fine and other games play fine too. It seems that only certain games always play up (like pacman & clones) and sometimes SFII plays up (other times its ok).
I`ll try deleting the inis and making a folder just for inis. Then I take it I just point to this ini folder within the mame.ini (in the mame directory) and point to it in the mamewah mame ini file.
The problem is Im not entirely sure what make my monitor is as there is no labels on it. Its in a neo geo mvs electrocoin uk machine and I think that points to it being a hanatrex or something.
I`ll keep playing with it and see how I go.
I tried using HWStretch but all the games seemed to lose their detail and seemed a but blurry.

I did as u said and all was well but I found that if i put hw stretch on then ALL my games were stretched. This made some of the other games a bit blurry and lost clarity. So i put hwstretch back to off. However, i then found by experimenting that any game that used a res of ??? x 256 would then roll the screen badly. I changed all games using this res to the nearest working res and all is fine now. Some games have lost a couple of pixels at the bottom of the screen but most of these are still playable and I now have got the clarity back in all my other games.
