Recommend a 19" LCD monitor
« on: June 26, 2006, 11:08:52 am »
After considerable debate between a horizontal 21" CRT and a rotatable 19" LCD, I've decided on the LCD.  Can someone recommend one that they are happy with?  Ideally it would be one that I could get at www.circuitcity.com, as I have a $200 gift certificate there.   :)

Unfortunately, I don't quite have it yet so I'm not sure how valid my opinion is, but I did a lot of research and chose a Viewsonic VX922 for my own machine (it'll be arriving day after tomorrow).  Tom's Hardware rated it as great for games (and not much else), due to having a 2 ms refresh and no overdrive problems, and every other review I found raves about it.  I looked at one at a retail store, and the picture was truly rock solid and really nice looking in fast-action gaming.  The viewing angle was quite good too, although (like most LCD's) the picture was only *perfect* directly in front of it - the picture kind-of starts to get washed out the further away from the center you are, though it doesn't become completely unviewable until you get around 170 degrees away from the center (meaning almost at the side).  Only real problem is its stand isn't setup to allow rotating the monitor, so if you want to use a normal stand in your machine, you'll have to buy a replacement (the monitor has a standard "VESA" stand hookup).

I too would be interested in hearing how this monitor worked out for you!  Please do update us.

I was planning on placing one in a Galaxian style cab.  Not having seen one of these screens in person, I'm a bit concerned about viewing angle.  When you get it hooked up, could you possible snap a few shots of the screen playing games from various viewing angles, to see if putting an LCD at that slant is even feasable?

Also, are you planning on decasing the screen for your application?
