AVGA and Mamewah / Mame Issues
« on: June 22, 2006, 03:13:05 pm »
Hi. Thanks to this forum ive got quite far in my project which was converting a neo geo mvs electrocoin cab to mame.
I got my avga card and jpac yesterday and connected it all up to my p4 1.5ghz pc with 512mb ram.
The first time I plugged it all in I couldnt get a pic on the arcade monitor and only got a selftest and sync in light, no sync ok light.
I pulled the card and put in my other normal pc grafix card on my normal monitor. I uninstalled the drivers I pulled the card and reinstalled my avga card. Still nothing. I changed the jumper setting to 25khz and I got loads of wavy lines. I put the jumper back on 15khz and all of a sudden it worked. I set the windows res to 640x380 and i have a usable picture. I configured mamewah to 380x288 and I have a usable mamewah screen (though its slightly blurry compared to a pc monitor). I used the mame res tool and all my games seem to be set at the right res now. However, when I play all the games, the picture is very bright and the definition is a little blurry. I might try reducing the brightness if there is a pot on the monitor somewhere if thats possible. Also is it possible that there is a way to get the picture less blurry (like a contrast or something)? The picture didnt seem to be as blurry or bright when I was using jamma pcb boards.
In my other cab with a pc monitor, the picture was the same until I put scanlines on.Then it was near on perfect. But on the arcade monitor, if I turn scanlines on it just sort of flickers. How do I know what pot is what on the monitor? Is it possible to get a very good pic on the monitor comparable to my mame cab with pc monitor?

perhaps its just a case of adjustment,on your monitor you will find a flyback transformer with two adjustable pots, one is for brightness and the other focus-try adjusting these first(the flyback is the large black or grey plastic componant with the thick red wire that goes to the top/middle of the tube with a suction cap,be careful when adjusting it not to touch anything else apart from the pots because there are some very high voltages present),always use a mirror so you don't have to stretch and adjust slowly

Cheers m8. I found 4 differnt pots and after adjusting all of them (not easy when you cant see the screen and have to do it a bit at a time!) ive got a pretty decent picture.

Many Thanks
