Can anyone help? Apparently I'm an idiot
« on: June 21, 2006, 09:34:54 pm »
Y'all I had it - GameEx was up and working a week ago, and today I loaded it up, it scrolled all the way to the last selection on the screen, and would not recognize my moving the joystick.   I checked - nothing wrong with the IPAC, worked on every other program EXCEPT the front end.

I don't know whether to laugh  :laugh2:,  cry ,  throw a fit  :hissy:,  beat my head against the wall  :banghead:,  or  :censored:

Are you sure the joystick isn't sending a down signal? Or perhaps the keyboard is sending the signal? Try firing up Notepad, or some other text editor to see if a key is being sent?

I don't use GameEx - too Windows like for me, but also check wherever it is to change key asignments, maybe even reset to defaults to see if that helps?

Havok,

As always, thanks for the help.  I fired up notedpad, and it just sat there, doing nothing, so I assumed it to not be a signal problem.  I also had notepad running while GameEx ran and again, nothing.

I lagree - it is very Windows-like, but we'd been using the GameEx front end simply because so far it had been the easiest of all of them for me to configure.   I'm going to go back in to it's configuration and see if it I can do just a general "reset".   Also, I hate to be such a newbie, but could I possiby fix it by doing a system restore to a point about two - three weeks ago when it was working??

Thanks!

A system restore might work. One thing that is nice about that is that you can do the restore, and if it does not work, or has unfortunate consequences, you can put it back.

Very true - what's equally wierd is that the IPAC works fine just running MAME by itself, etc.

There was a line of code in the GameEx where it apparently tried to find the USB joystick and could not, but then apparently substituted its own lines of code or something (I could not find them) because it then claimed the joystick found in the log.

I'm going to make sure all connections are still good before doing the system restore, but past that I don't know what else to do.

Thanks again for your help!

Havok:

Found my problem.

We'd recently done some work on the cabinet, mainly adding the marquee.  In order to make room to get in and tighten everything up,  I had to remove the Control Panel, which meant all the wires had to be removed.

When I rehooked everything, I found a wire I thought was my USB cable from the IPAC and hooked it back in.  Little did I realize that I had actually hooked up an old USB joystick instead, AS WELL AS the IPAC.   The USB Joystick was buried under a couple of paint bottles, and they apparently were pressing down on the stick just enough to cause it to move - either that or GameEx didn't know what to do with the two joysticks plugged in to different USB ports!

At any rate, all is right with the world again and I can proceed with fixing up my front end.  Thanks for the tip - I might have never thought to check those connections if you hadn't mentioned a stray signal!  :)

I was just going to suggest you check for that joystick!

 ;D

Glad you got it working!
