I thought everyone knew what booya means, but heres the definition:

1.   booya         
   
It means basically, "bam!", "in your face", and "hell yeah", all at the same time. A term that self congradulates the user, describes excitement, lets others know the magnificence of the celebration or rouse as well as the superiority of the user, and is used as an exclamation of those ideas.

I understood it originating as gangbanger slang for the sound of a shotgun. (I heard of this back in '92)

Yup, there was even a Rap Group, The Boo-Yaa Tribe, who released their first album in 1990.  They also gave the shotgun sound explaination for the boo-Yaa in their name.

I assume that's the description of the sound a shotgun makes only if you've never actually heard a shotgun and had someone describe it to you over the phone.
