Games like Major Havoc?
« on: June 14, 2006, 05:58:34 am »

Hey all!

I just tried Major Havoc, and wow that is a fun game!!! I really like the early 3D
look(sounds weird?), it's so clean and fluid.

Are there any games like that? Yes I know Star Wars ;D

Thanks,

Nicholas

You probably mean the vector games?

There are a bunch - I find that some of my favorite games are vector based:

Check out Gravitar. It's kind of like the landing part of Major Havoc combined with the ship piloting of Lunar Lander and the controls of Asteroids.
Also if you have a twin stick setup, try Black Widow. This is a great and very under-rated game in my opinion.

Atari made some great color vectors.

Lots of great games... Tempest gets a LOT of play at my house.  Tailgunner is fun (but I can't get it to work on my cab... mouse only... joystick doesn't seem to work last I tried).

Ripoff and Armor Attack are timeless classics in my book.
I have changed my nickname to "Cakemeister". Please do not PM the Buddabing account because I do not check it anymore.

Please read the wiki!

Oh by the way, they don't HAVE to be vector-games....it just seems that
these have a very special gameplay.

Yes!!! Asteroids Rules!!! Too bad you can not make it look as good as the arcade unless you have a real vector monitor

I got a chance to see a real Asteroids, it had been 20 years or more since I saw a real one.

It's the bullets man!!! the bullets are so bright  :o... you just can not reproduce that on a raster monitor!!!

I tried tweaking MAME emulated Asteroids a lot before I finally got a real one.  I even tried that AsteroidsGL emulator from http://caesar.logiqx.com/php/emulator.php?id=asteroidsgl

This one is really cool because you can substitute different bitmaps for the shots so they look more like the real thing.  You can sort of "emulate" that "electron bath" glow that you get from a vector monitor.  You can even edit the shot bitmaps, make them different colors, textures, sized, etc...

I even got a 27" presentation monitor   :o :o  like the readme file said to get for the best visual perormance.  This emulator is really good vissually, but the gameplay jitters ocaisionally.

So I figured the only way to make it look like the real thing is to actually get the real thing!!! so I went out and got a dedicated Asteroids machine...So I now have a full MAME cab and a dedicated Asteroids machine!!!...ahhhh...LIFE...IS...GOOD!!!

So what about all the other vector games?
Fortunately, the color vector games look really good on a non-vector monitor in my opinion.  The higher the resolution on your monitor, the better they will look.  So I am playing those on my MAME cab.

Now it has been a very long time since I saw a Tempest or Space Duel...so that opinion may change if I get a chance to see a real color vector game again... ;)
