DOS dmame and ArcadeOS startup delay question
« on: June 13, 2006, 12:16:13 am »

I just finished most of the software configuration of what will become a bartop machine.  It is a P2 400mhz, with 512M RAM and 6G of disk.  It is running DOS 7.0 and the latest dmame and ArcadeOS.

The question I've got is how long should it take for a game to start?  On this machine it is taking between 20 to 30 seconds from when I select it in ArcadeOS to when I see the startup (test) screens for the game.  Is this normal?  If not, which configuration should be changed?

Thank you in advance.

First of all, I wouldn't use the last DMAME for such a low-spec machine. Unless there is some game recently added to MAME that you're interested in, I would go quite several versions back, maybe 0.56 or 0.70. Also, in your mame.ini, or dmame.cfg, or whatever the file is now, check that skip_validitychecks is set to 1.

Thanks.  That did it.  The start time is reduced to less than 10 seconds.  That's acceptable.  The games I'm running are all vintage 80's games and are running great.

You have an attitude problem. Never mix chorizo with MAME, mate  ;)

Do you have any Fosters left? Share some with me, buddy.

Excuse me?!?  Fosters?!?  While I respect this Austrialian brew, I am an patriotic when it comes to my libations.  There will be Sierra Nevada Pale Ale on tap for all those who wish to celebrate the solution to this eternal dilemma.

Translation to English: Free beer.  Need I say more?  Hey, I'm one step closer to the Bartop I'm building, just don't tell my wife. :)
