color TV is displaying in B/W
« on: June 03, 2006, 11:48:28 pm »
OK, this is weird. i have a cab with a decased 27" TV mounted vertically. everything was working good for the first 3 months...

now for some reason when i turn on the computer the TV starts out in Black and white... no color whatsoever, it displays everything properlay, just no color! after about a minute or two the color suddenly comes back.... works fine from then on.

i have NO idea what is causing this, i have traced every cable and cleaned the connections and made sure they were all seated properly... but i am stumped.

I am a telephone tech, not a monitor tech! ANY help would be appreciated! :banghead:

What's your connection between the vid card and the TV?  My bet is S-Video.

yup, it is indeed s-video... hmmm... my first thought was "but this hapens with any TV (i have tried 2 others" duhhh, brain fart. I'll try pulling the ATI 9200 out and put my 3DFX 3500 in and see if it makes any difference!

thanks for the help everyone! :notworthy: sometimes you just need a fresh pair of eyes! :-[

Actually, try another S-Video cable, if you have one.  They're regretably fragile.

i had the same thought, i swapped out the s-video cable and it seems to have taken care of the problem, for now....

i really should start paying more then $1 for them... i would probably get better quality if i did :)

I think my problem may very well be a driver issue.  I'll give that a shot.

well i am not sure that mine is a driver issue, as the bios graphic displays in B/W... and i would assume that there are no drivers running yet.

hopefully the s-video cable swap holds up, so it wont be an issue, but if that fails I'll try new drivers for the card. if all that fails I'll try another card!  :dizzy:

Just a thought.  Have you used the TV's buttons or its remote, and played with the Color and Tint controls on it.  If the Color control is turned all the way down, it will display in B&W.

Well i can't speak for others, but... my TV has been decased, the controls are inaccessible without removing the back of the cab, the Ir receiver for the remote is gone... i think it is sitting in a box with a few spare buttons and joysticks :)  and i think the remote was an impromptu dog chew toy. so it is highly unlikely the the controls were messed with...

judging from the other replies that this seems to be a problem with ATI Raideon and their driver and/or an s-video problem.

I had in and out color issues and then one day I plugged in the s video with the computer on and since then it's been black and white. :banghead:  I probably shorted something, but it doesn't seem like that.  It seems like it is something to do with the card.

just in case someone is tracking this problem, the cable swap lasted about a week...

i am going to contact ATI Tech support see if they have any ideas.
