Recommend me some PS2 games
« on: May 31, 2006, 07:13:51 pm »
I recently bought a PS2. I had always planned on buying one, but had planned on waiting until the PS3 was out. But a while ago I was at Best buy (I window shop there) and there was a Guitar Hero demo. I had heard that it was good so I tried it. About 2 hours later I bought it (from the ciruit city accrossed the street) and a used slim model PS2. I've played the hell out of GH, and so now I'm in the market for some new games. Since I had always planned to wait I never really kept up with what was going on in PS2 land. The only game I know I should get is Katamari Damacy. So I turn to you guys for suggestions.

I'm not a big fan of FPS control schemes that uses the left analog stick to aim and the right one to move simultaneously. I find it to be an incredibly awkward arangement not at all helped by the awkward placement of the left analog stick on the PS2 controller. I think traditional fighting games (health bar, button combos) are boring. Ditto for FF-style-walk-you-trhough-the-story RPGs. Other than that I enjoy a relatively wide varity of genres, especially anything with good multiplayer.

Thanks in advance.

Note: The list below is based on reviews I have read about the games.  I do not own a PS2 and have played none to very little of these games. This (*) symbol next to the game means I have played it on Xbox or Xbox 360.

-Viewtiful Joe 2     Genre: Action            Multiplayer: No

-*Any of the Grand Theft Auto's which I'm sure you have heard about.

-Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War        Genre: Action    Multiplayer: No

-*Prince of Persia: Sands of Time        Genre: Action    Multiplayer: No

OK so you don't like First Person Shooters, Role Playing Games, and Fighting Games.  That cuts out a pretty big chunk of the PS2's library.  But don't sweat it too much.  The PS2's selection of games is so huge that even without those gener's there are still plenty of great games for you to play.

Since you like Guitar Hero so much I take it to mean that you are kind of into rhythem games.  Frequency and Amplitude are some other great rhythem games that are amazing.

The ports of most of the Arcade Light Gun games are pretty awsome.  Time Crisis 3 is going on sale next week at Game Stop for only $25 with 2 light gun controllers included.  I'd definently recomend picking up a copy of that game.

If you want to try some great horror games I'd recomend trying out Resident Evil 4, Silent Hill 3, or Fatal Frame II.  The Onimusha Games are a must play as well.

If you like platformers you can't go wrong with Psychonauts.  Jak II and Jak III were also really great.
Also don't forget LEGO Star Wars.  That game was awsome.

If you want to play some great Hack and Slash games go with either God of War, X-Men Legends II, or
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.

As far as Racing Games go if you want some thing that is pure fun go with Burnout.  If you want some games that are great but are a little more involved I'd recomend Need for Speed Underground 2 and Midnight Club 3.

That should be enough to get you started.

I notice you didn't include GT4 in the racing games list. Is that because it was mentioned already or because it didn't live up to the hype?

Oh, and to clairify:its not that I don't like consol FPSs, I loved Metroid Prime, I just don't like the ones that have really awkward controlls. Like that 007 game I played the one time. And there are fighting games I like, like power stone 2 and Smash Bros. I just don't like the very traditional ones.

Gran Turismo is a great game too.  It offers a huge variety in the amount of cars, and the way each car handles.  It can get pretty intense when you start going at ridiculously fast speeds.  And looking at the pretty scenery is nice too.  But it lacks online play, and it is strictly Circuit Racing.  The other games I mentioned offer a variety of different styles of races like sprints, and drag racing.  They also are underground street racers which means you will have to weave around traffic which is something you don't have to worry about in Gran Turismo.  It all really comes down to what style of game play you preffer.

As for fighting games if you are in to wrestleing at all SmackDown! vs. Raw '06 is a must.  Some other great games you might consider as others have mentioned just about any of the Grand Theft Auto games are going to be really fun.  And if you haven't tried any extreme sports games yet I'd recomend giveing Tony Hawk: American Wasteland and SSX Tricky a try.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the Rachet and Clank games, I love those games

Heres some other great game series on the console,
X-Men Legends
Kingdom Hearts
Metal Gear Solid
Grand Theft Auto

most of these games can be bought as a greatest hit, which costs only $20 and sometimes contains extra features.  I got my ps2 2 years ago and most of my collection is greatest hits, and best buy often sells 2 GH titles for $30.

If you like Sports games, try Winning Eleven 8 or 9. Winning Eleven 9 is now online.

Winning Eleven 10 is right around the corner. For those that don't know any better, they are soccer games......and darn good ones at that.

It involves building a special controller or finding one on the 'net which can be somewhat expensive but... any of the Pop'n Music series

oh yea, they are also imports so you would need a way to play them.  Modchip, swap disk, hdloader, whatever else is out there for this purpous

If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

If you're into hack-n-slash, go get dynasty warriors.  You vs enemy army.

Major difference between the GT series and Burnout can be summed up rather quickly: If you want to play , get GT.  If you want to  some one up >:D, get Burnout.  Rumor has it that due to real life cars being used, the licensing won't let the cars have visual damage in GT.  The controls will respond differently with damage, but the car won't show it.

If you watch NASCAR for the race, get GT; for the spectacular crashes, Burnout.  (A friend told me that.)

Speeking of burnout...  IMHO, the only one worth getting is Burnout 3 Takedown...  Revenge just didn't do anything for me and 3 seems to be when they were at the peak of the series.
