  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
Or, for that matter, are there any settings that would kill the monitor. Just to clarify,  I am not talking about reducing life expectancy, I am talking about instant failure. Any input is welcomed.

well i think its total rubbish,my thoughts are the only way to destroy a monitor(non physical) are high over voltage input on mains or signal in,the first would only cause minimum damage on the input stage of the power supply and the latter would cause damage to the colour/signal convertor side of the monitor

Absolutely an arcade monitor can be damaged by using the wrong horizontal refresh rate. Especially if it's an older type with no protection against too high horizontal frequencies. The horizontal output stage will be working harder that it's designed for. The flyback transformer will produce higher voltages which feed back to the high voltage supply. Either the flyback will fail or the output transistor or maybe a whole lot of components in the output stage.
Recently-made monitors will protect against this and turn off the scan if voltages go too high.

Andy,
Thank you for shedding some light on it. So for the new monitors such as Wells-Gardner, Billabs, Betson higher refresh rate shouldn't be used, but none the less there is an internal protection that would disconnect and protect the monitor. The monitor should go back to normal after the reboot, correct? Or is the some sort of reset on the monitor itself?

I fried my new D9200 due to a refresh rate which the monitor could not support. Is there some sort of protection? Not that I noticed. I fried it because I was continuously sending out the wrong refresh rate to the monitor and by then it was too late. My D9200 did not work again after a reboot. You won't destroy the tube or anything, but it will overheat. You will need to go to a tech repair shop if this happens. Price? parts: about 40Euros (50-60 US$) and labour about 90Euros (110 US $)

Prevent it by using powerstrip + refresh force and read this article;

it says it all.
