wells gardner k4605 monitor help
« on: May 23, 2006, 08:45:15 pm »
I have a wells gardner 19" k4605 monitor and when I play the game the picture on the screen bounces(not sure else how to describe it). The picture is not still. The vertical hold is fine and so is the horizontal hold. Also if the game is on for long the picture goes green for a brief second  the goes back to normal and a black shadow line will roll up the screen. I have done a cap it on it which didn't seem to help much. Is this a chassis problem or a picture tube problem or is it the game board. Another thing that happens is if you leave it on for awhile the sound goes to a high pitch squealing so I ended up cutting one of the speaker wires for now. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

What is the name of the machine in question? Is this a dedicated original game or is it in a conversion cabinet?

Sounds like you may have more than one problem i.e. monitor, gameboard, AND power supply.

The pcb in there right now is Renegade and when I got the cabinet it had wrestlefest in it. It is definitely not a dedicated original cabinet, someone has messed with it. It is a jamma cabinet though.

I assume you resoldered the many numerous bad solder joints this chassis is well known for when you had it out to do the capkit? Especially bad joints are at the connector male pins for both the video interface board and the "hor/ver" board. Same goes for the female connectors on both of those same boards too.

As to the momentary green flashing, it's a strong possibility the picture tube has an internal short which is momentary. Connecting the tube to a picture tube tester/restorer will confirm it and sometimes can cure it. It's also possible that a bad solder joint on the video interface board or bum transistor on it can cause the same problem, but I don't think this is happening in your case. In my experience I'd be 99% certain the flashing green is a internal picture tube problem.

Thanks for the info Ken, I thought the tube might be the problem. I have checked all the solder joints on the board and they all look good.  I do have an extra tube here that was used with a wells gardner k4900 chassis, can I use this tube with the 4600 chassis. Are the pins on the neck tube of the 4900 the same as the 4600?

Yes you can use the 4900's tube with the 4600 series-----but you'll need to swap the yokes as they are totally different impedances.
