I'm currently trying to decide on which front end to use for my first arcade cabinet.  It will have console emulation duties but will primarily be Arcade.  I am leaning towards Atomic, but just have a few questions that I couldn't seem to find answers to anywhere else.

-Can Atomic be configured to work with something like Johnny 5?  I am looking to use both the controls and commands type of features from within Mame and possibly other other emulators also.

-Can Atomic easily filter game lists for console emulators?  What I'd like to be able to do is have game lists under each emulator for things like Verified US Games, US Games, US Hacks, ect.  Basically when in one of these lists you wouldn't have 15 versions of 1080 Snowboarding, it would just show the version(s) of that rom that corresponds to the rules of the list.  I imagine you could sort like this manually, but is there an easy way to get this done for an extensive rom list?

-Somewhat related, can Atomic show just the game name and not the info that is in some rom names realted to the condition and version of the rom?  I found some posts concerning this from searching but from what I understand it was limited to modifying each game name by hand in the (if I remember correctly) fulllist.txt file.  Is there an automated way of doing this??

I hope I didn't load to many issues into one post, and thumbs up on the nicely put together and maintained FE!!

Thanks

I have never tried Johnny 5. But it is surely doable.  If you explain me how works Johnny 5 , i could say you how to use it with Atomic.

As you said, you can build your list manually ,  Atomic (except for mame) doesn't include this kind of list generator. But i suppose you could find external tools to do that  and then use the lists in Atomic.
Therefore if you find INI  files (like for example : Genre.ini for mame) for others emulators, you can use it in Atomic and Atomic will generate the list for you as it does with MAME.

To do that, you are correct you have to edit the file FullList.txt by hand and remove what you want.  Or if you use the last Arcade enhanced plug'n play module , i think the included list generator remove this kind of info. (but not sure, i didn't tested it yet , but i think angelscry (main pnp module maker) said me that).

In a general way , Atomic doesn't include advanced "roms" management tools. My idea , is that there are already lot of tools that does that and there are very good.  So as i don't have lot of free time, i prefer concentrate my effort on the Front end itself and try to innovate and not try to do that others already did.

Thanks for the quick reply, youki!!

From what I understand, and I'm still getting into all of this, Johnny 5 works through mame, not the FE so I imagine it would work but I thought maybe you were already familiar with what it would take when running Atomic.  Here is a great page put together by one of the members on this board that goes over how J5 works, among other things.  If you have time to give it a quick look I would like to hear your thoughts on any potential complications with Atomic.

Thanks again for the info and for a great FE.

EDIT: How about that link then, doh:  http://www.mameworld.net/tigerheli/johnny/

A couple of questions regarding the fulllist.txt:

1) If you remove entries from it, it will not display those in the list, regardless of if the rom is in there or not? So you can remove puckman?

2) How is fulllist.txt updated?

3) If you change the descriptions, for example changing "Roboton (Green Label)" to just "Robotron", it will display that way in the game list?

I have changed my nickname to "Cakemeister". Please do not PM the Buddabing account because I do not check it anymore.

Please read the wiki!

The FullList is just used as dictionnary to translate ROMNAME to Title name.

If  the "translation" for your romname is not found in the fulllist , the romname will be displayed instead of the title.

If you want remove puckman :
- if your configuration use a GAMELIST you have just to remove it from the GAMELIST (no need to remove it from the FullList.txt)  ,
- if your cofiguration simply browser a folder and doesn't use GAMELIST , you have to remove (or rename the rom extension) the rom from the folder.

2) How is fulllist.txt updated?
The fulllist txt file in case of mame  can be simply generated like that :

Code: [Select]
mame.exe -listfull > fulllist.txt
Usually, i update the fulllist.txt provided with Atomic  at each version of Atomic with the current version of MAME.

You can edit the Fulllist.txt directly using the notepad if you want add a game or modify the title.

the FullList.txt doesn't work only for MAME , you can use it with all emulator if you need to translate a romname to a title name.  you can use it to translate video or music name in to a title if you use Jukebox feature too.
the syntax of a row if very simple :

Code: [Select]
romname(without extension)   "title to display"
Sample of fulllist.Txt
Code: [Select]
puckman   "PuckMan (Japan set 1, Probably Bootleg)"
puckmana  "PuckMan (Japan set 2)"
puckmanf  "PuckMan (Japan set 1 with speedup hack)"
puckmanh  "Puckman (Falcom?)"
pacman    "Pac-Man (Midway)"
pacmanf   "Pac-Man (Midway, with speedup hack)"
puckmod   "PuckMan (Japan set 3)"
pacmod    "Pac-Man (Midway, harder)"
newpuc2   "Newpuc2"
newpuc2b  "Newpuc2 (set 2)"

Exactly.

Dusting Mustang :

I checked the page on Johny 5. It should work without problem  too much with Atomic.  All method described can work i think.

Also if you use buddamame cp view will work with Atomic as I have played around with this some.
