Galaga cocktail rebuild---- NEW PICS!
« on: May 11, 2006, 01:26:40 am »
I traded a friend of mine my Q*Bert for his Galaga cocktail.  This thing has been sitting around for a long time and hasn't been restored or played.  Overall, the cab is solid, but a bit rough.  The artwork is basically gone, the bottom of the cab is flaky, and it used to smell like dog urine (didn't when he brought it over though).

It was working.....mostly.  Graphics issues started showing up immediately (see my other post).   This is my first Galaga, so I'm in new territory.  I worked on the board awhile, and everytime I fixed one glitch something else showed up.

I ended up buying a Gallag board off of RGVAC.  It was dusty and untested, but complete.  I built a rough-in harness to test it, and guess what?  GRAPHICS GLITCHES!

I worked on it and isolated the problem to the sync buss daughter card.  I replaced it with a Pac 285 board, and still no good.  Mess with it some more and discovered the socket under it was shot.  That has now been replaced with a new one from Fry's, and it's good to go!

I have now stripped all of the Galaga harness out of the cab and cleaned it up a bit.  I also built a complete Gallag harness, figured out the pinout and dipswitches, and tested it all.  Working all the way!

Here's the thing.....there's little info on Gallag boards on the web, and many of them conflict!  I got lucky with my main harness that it was correct the first time.  I ahd to redo my video harness once.  The dipswitches were a bit more work.

Now I need to put it all into the cab and solder everything.

Artwork will come later.....

Sorry, no real "before" or "during" pics on the wiring.  But here is the cab and what was going on with the original board.

Gala-guts!!  Here's the harness and PCB cage I carefully removed.  I had actually left the cage in at first, but the Gallag board set is much larger adn I had to wrack the cage to hold it.  That caused the cage to short against the monitor frame!  Sounded bad over the speaker and then blew a fuse.  Took a little while before I noticed what was going on.   :dizzy:

All better now....

New wiring installed, except for the lights.  I haven't bothered with them yet.

Just curious (and fantastic job by the way!) but why go to all the trouble of rebuilding your harness' if you got the eBay board to work like you said in an earlier post? Were you just doing a little preventative maintenance? If so all I can say is WOW. How long has it taken you to get this far?

Gallag has a totally different pinout than the original Galaga board.  So rather than hack up a complete, working Galaga harness, I just built a new one for the Gallag board.  (My original test harrness was just power and video.)

This came out really nice.  I think most of the Galaga cocktails I can remember seeing as of late didn't look this good.   :notworthy:

Looks great, EyeDoc!

IIRC, if you replace ROM 2 with the NAMCO Galaga ROM 2, you can get the Gallag board to say Galaga ... of course I've never tried it, just recall reading it on ionpool before I got a working Galaga boardset.

Cheers.

I may do that at some point, but "Gallag" doesn't bother me one bit.  I actually prefer this boardset to the Namco original (which I have and will probably sell).

I also just got a new underlay from Quarterhorse, which will REALLY improve the look!

He's a good guy here on BYOAC.  He had an extra Galaga underlay from his own project, that was all.

Here it is!  Eventually, I'll get new glass, but this works for now.
Now I need my CPOs and to repaint the coin door.
