Dreamcast - NesterDC
« on: May 10, 2006, 12:59:45 am »
I just got a Dreamcast tonight.  Seems pretty cool.  I realize I'm new so I'm sure I'm doing something stupid so I'm hoping that someone here can show me the light.

I'm trying to get NesterDC to run on my Dreamcast (built in July of 1999).  I've looked at the tutorals on www.dcemulation.com and tried to burn the CDR (not RW).  But it won't load.  So, I figured I was doing something stupid, so I downloaded the Nero format of a NesterDC boot CD.  Then I thought I'd give DCFactory a try...That didn't work.  So, I thought maybe it won't read my CDR, plays my CDR music CDs though.  Then, I thought maybe it doesn't like Nero 7.1.2.  So, I downloaded and burned UtopiaDC v. 1.1.  That works fine (won't load my NesterCDs though).  So, it seems that my CDRs are okay, CD burner is okay, Nero is okay, it has to be operator error, but I can't figure it out.  Any ideas????

Thanks in advance....

What speed did you burn at?  Sometimes that is an issue.  Try burning at 8X.

Well, it must be one of two things.  I noticedthey are really pushing for DiskJuggler.  I personally like Nero, but hey use what works, right?  So, I downloaded that and just ran the Demo version (limits you to 1x).  NesterDC works fine.  So, I don't know if it's the software or the speed, but at least I can burn.

Thanks for your help!!

I use Alcohol120% to burn Dreamcast discs, with a pretty high sucess rate.

Yeah.. DiscJuggler or Alcohol 120% are what you want to use.
Nero burns over version 5.5 are fraught with errors...

Yes nero + dc burning = coaster.  I don't believe you will ever get it to work.

Alcohol120 is a great app...

CDI2Nero will convert most CDI images to a usable Nero image. It's faster to just use A120% though.

I made quite a few Dreamcast coasters before switching to Alcohol 120.  Now everything burns fine for Dreamcast.

I also wasted quite a few cd-r`s using nero, now I use Discjuggler and find it fine.  Also check your media, my Dreamcast didn`t like very cheap cd-r`s, I use Verbatim now and havent had any problems so far (touch wood).

Sorry for responding to an old post but my question is very much like these.
Having trouble successfully burning anything with DiscJuggler or even Alcohol120.  After performing a test run with either application and then burning the process still fails!  Could I be doing something incredibly stupid when I extract the files?  I try to burn the image at the lowest speed.  This is incredibly frustrating to me.  Any help appreciated.

OK, so I take my file I get from fileshare, etc.  I right click and extract file(s) with WinRar.  Sometimes I have various file and sometimes a have a single cdi. or nrg file.  I go to Alcohol120 to burn this and the only file I can click on to burn is the cdi or nrg file.  Do I need to include everything in the extracted folder?  Is there a sequence of toggles I need on or off through Alcohol120 to burn.  It seems other are not having near this much problem backing up images.

I am also using an 80 min 700MB disc, but nothing has even come close to filling a cd.

Are you burning the .CDI as an image or are you burning the .CDI onto the disk? It sounds like you are burning the .CDI file onto the disk... Yeah that wont work.

Paddus Disk Juggler or Alcohol 120 both should be able to burn the .CDI as an IMAGE not a DATA cd containing the file.

To those that think there is illegal stuff going on.  There is no direct proof.  This thread is fine so far.  It is only talking about how to get Nester on the dc and how to burn nester correctly.  Nester is an emulator much like mame.  All's good.

"Talk like that is going to get you busted..."

Thanks SirPoonga.  I just got a dreamcast from a friend that has 4 games but are so badly scratched only 1 plays, well sort of. The game is HydroThunder.  I want to be able to use the others at some point.  Since I own these games it is not illegal to back them up.  I am very interested in the Dreamcast because of its capabilities.

To my understanding this is the process needed to run an emulater too, correct?

Goz, when I open Disk Juggler or Alcohol 120 I leave all the settings alone, as most guides instruct this.  For Alcohol 120 these are the steps I take:

1. Image Burning Wizard
2. Click Browse
3. Choose file (singular) from folder cdi or nrg
4. Next
5. Typically will run simulation first (which is almost always successful)
6. when simulation successful choose to burn image
7. Failure every time, usually "error in image download"

I know I am the problem and am probably missing a crucial step in all of this.  Starting to make me wonder if it was worth the $20 I paid him.

Sounds like you are doing it correctly. I usually dont bother with the simulation but that makes no difference. If you have access to a friends PC I'd try it there if it still doesn't work I'd suspect the image. I dont recall if NesterDC is usable in CHankast but if it is you could test the validity of the image there.

If you want I can host an image for you to download that I know works. PM me if interested in going that route.

The $20 was for the Dreamcast.  Sd he didn't use it much anymore.  Probably because none of the games worked.  Or at least the ones he said he used to have.

Whatzcrackn - I did get the website and looked at one of the posts you had.  Only problem I have is nothing new was discussed.  I really appreciate the help though.  I am working with someone else to see if it is user error or image error.  Hopefully will find out soon.  I am still open to any suggestions or help.

kool lemme know what happens.  I know when I was having the issues it was the DC (2000 model).  Once I used my other one (1999 model) everything ran smoothly.

I think I am not unpacking things correctly with WinRar.  Just trying to figure everything out.  Its like I am standing to close to the picture, nothing makes sense right now.

I have a DC... and all my backups work.  I use DiscJuggler to burn, Mode 2, no more than 8X burn speed.  I probably have 100 or so backups, no issues.

He's actually getting write errors when burning. Its not a matter of the DC using the CD's (not yet anyway)
