Wells-Gardner monitors major complaints!
« on: May 06, 2006, 11:20:23 am »
Check out the "technical forums" over at www.vendoramusements.com under the "Video Games" section. There's a thread titled, "Open Letter To Wells Gardner" in which the site owner (and major game operator) really rips into Wells-Gardner for the piss-poor design & quality of the D9200 monitors. And I don't blame him either. He is 100% right.

It's well worth reading.....you guys are really going to have your eyes popping out your head when you read it.  :o  The thing is this guy is spot-on about everything on these monitors. Even his very experienced monitor tech is throwing in the towel on 9200 monitors.

Ken, what would be your suggestion for a good 25" + monitor?  I was planning on buying a D9200 but now a $150 TV seems to be a better choice.

What would you recommend as the resident monitor expert?

Thanks for your time BTW,

Betson/Kortek, Wei-ya/Billabs, Happ Controls/Tovis seem ok.

Thanks again.  I'll check out the various options and avoid the D9200.

Incredible Technologies (www.itsgames.com), the manufacturer of the famous Golden Tee golf series, had problems with the D9200 monitors and their technicians started issuing their own service bulletins detailing the problems with this monitor and what Incredible Technologies monitor repair department was doing to fix those problems. Wells-Gardner wasn't being very helpful, so the staff at Incredible Technologies came up with some of their own solutions.

Dweebs, you do know that the specific monitor you linked to is only VGA, meaning that it won't do the 15 kHz needed for arcade games. Is that what you need?

Actually no, I didnt realize that.  It shouldn't make a difference for my purposes though in a Mame cab.

Thanks for the heads up.

I have never really understood why game manufacturers such as Incredible Technologies would want to use a D9200 in their machines. Why not use a cheaper, simpler, probably more reliable, fixed frequency monitor?
The problems that the poster mentions with capacitor quality is probably only largely an issue when the game is left powered on 24/7 and cheaper caps dry out in the heat. This is less likely to be a problem for a home user.
That's not to say people have not had problems with these monitors in home use but I suspect far fewer instances.
The D9200 and D9500 are still great tri-sync monitors IMHO especially when used with an ArcadeVGA card or other multi-frequency source, but maybe the BILLABS is a better bet.

I actually had to work on a 9200 a couple of months ago. It was my first (and it's going to be my last) experience with that model. What a piece of ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- monitor. Who the ---fudgesicle--- designed this?
