Artwork (snaps and screens) Volunteers Wanted.
« on: April 27, 2006, 08:36:38 pm »
I have recently discovered the world of No-Intro rom sets and images. I won't go into details about the roms but these guys are putting a lot of effort into doing things in a unified/organized manner as far as the images are concerned.

Many people and resources come and go in this community and projects die but this one seems to have a good future and is going very strong at the moment. You can check out their site here:

http://www.gbadat.altervista.org/

Be usre to click on the link to the associated Screenshot Archive (not the one we all visit frequently) in the middle section. It will take you here:

http://no-intro.dlgsoftware.net/main.php

Personally I have donated and plan on investing quite a bit of time and effort to help the project. I realize that most people here and at Mameworld just take and very few give back. Well, here is your chance to get involved in a worthwile project, IMHO. A little bit of everyones time can make a big difference for many of us. Visit the forums on the second link at see how you can help.

This is so cool, I hate all the bad dumps and crap that good tools have kept alive.

jc please don't compare our patrons to the most of the clowns over at mameworld.  Not saying they are perfect, but they are definately above mameworld quality.  ;)

It seems like a good idea.  I only wish I hadn't thrown out all my snes boxes a few months ago.  They were trashed, but a decent scan could have been made.

However I have a pretty large collection of nes, snes and n64 carts.  Most of the boxes and manuals are long gone, but when I have a slow evening I'll try to scan a bunch a send em over.

I have converted my entire cabinet to the sets that they currently have available and am anxiously awaiting more. I think if we could get a descent "cabinet" standard (like this one) then maybe some of the FE devs may put the effort into building a rom filter into their FE. None of the one's I have tried (haven't tried the all though) have it built in except for mame which relies on an external file.

Must have not tried dk then... it's had a rom filter since day 1.

Also you can sort via wildcard searches, so you could easily filter off all the bootleg and hacked roms... assuming they are properly labeled of course.  (Which goodtools usually does).

Dk makes lists based on clrmamepro dat files, so popping one of these dats from this project into it's dats folder should work just fine.

p.s.  Mame isn't a fe, and it doesn't use an external file, unless you are talking about mame32 and the catver.ini which has absolutely nothing to do with the roms themselves rather the game type.  (Also dk has supported catvers not only for mame but any emu since day 1).

I'm not trying to self-promote here, but dk isn't just another pretty face... it's the back-end that's the most impressive.  ;)

Howard,
I am a little disappointed. You are getting VERY predictable. I specifically added the "(I haven't tried them all)" part just to CYA when you replied saying that DK could do this. I have never tried it (took a quick look once) but would have guessed it could (that's a compliment in case you missed it!). I am well aware that Mame is not a FE, but thanks again for educating the masses. I am sure you knew fully the point that I was trying to make.
Maybe someday I will give DK a go but I have to ask, What is the obsession with Dragons? I have always wondered that. The name alone and the default graphics are what have always turned me off.

Thanks,
John

I always hoped someone would go a step further than this and make a tool, where you could list languages in order of preference that you would like, English, Spanish, German, etc.   This tool would then give you a DAT file with the best English version of each ROM that there was an English version of, the best Spanish version of each ROM that there was no English version of, etc, so you ended up with only one version of each ROM, and in the lunges you preferred most.

I completely agree. For the true collector AND player this is needed badly.

This http://goodmerge.sourceforge.net/About.php seems like a good start, if you could run the roms through it, then just delete all but best from each set.

Yeah.. actually if you run goodtools with the default options the roms are sorted into folders based on region.... also unless you are really dim all you have to do to sort by language is to sort by the region code  ( [ u ] = u.s. [j]=japan, ect....)

While I can understand how this would be useful to our multilingual friends, I dont see what purpose it'd serve for us dumb americans.  Personally I can speak English, enough Spanish to Save my life and myabe a few slavic curse words.

There are only two countries who actually make games and release them exclusively in their region, namely the US and Japan.  So if there's an english release of a game, it'll be available in all major european languages or at the very least, english, which everyone seems to know.  If it's a japanese only release, then it is only released in that language, and the number of non-japanese that speak japanese is very limited.

Again, to me the best course seems to be to sort by country and just leave it at that.
