Lagging video/picture in MAME games
« on: April 20, 2006, 02:38:35 am »
I have a problem...

See, I run MAME 32 (latest version) and often times when playing games (especially in fast motion) whether they are newer or older games, there is a lag in video. For example, i play a game and the screen scrolls but there seems to be a lag in the video image. It's hard to explain, but it is really annoying. I wish I had a video clip so you can see what I mean.

here are the specs of my machine:

Windows XP SP2
120gb SATA
P4 1.7ghz
512mb RAM
nVidia GeForce AGP 5600 256mb video card
ECS PT800CE-A 800 FSB Motherboard

I have tested MAME32 (latest version) on 3 other machines with similar or better specs than the above and the results are the same. And I know it's not my monitor because this happens on every monitor I tested (17" LCD, 19" CRT, TV, projector, etc).

Can anyone help?

Yeah, I am getting that on Centipede Rev3 on my MAME box, I ran MAME 0.79 and 0.89 and maybe 102 with the same results.

My MAME BOX specs:

ECS KT600-A (I think)
Sempron 3000 Socket A.
512 MB memory
MSI Radeon 9550 AGP
Old Magnavox 20" CRT + 27" JVC AV-27530 using component inputs (Extended desktop w/TV as primary)
El Cheapo powersupply

This morning I ran Centiped Rev3 with MAME 0.79 on my gaming PC and it had no lag at all.  My gaming PC specs:

ASUS A8V mobo
AMD Athlon 64 3000 socket 939
ATI Radeon 9800 pro
1 GB Corsair XMS
21" Nokia CRT monitor
Antec TrueControl 550 power supply

I will try to run some more tests tonight and see what happens.

This article may be helpful:

http://retroblast.com/articles/winmamemon_1.html

It talks about tweaking the settings that MAME uses to display video.

Hey, I just downloaded and installed an optimized version of MAME32 on a fresh WindowsXP install on the same machine I specified above. I tried Centipede (Rev3) on it this morning and it was nice and smooth.

I got the MAME optimized for AMD from this site:

http://redump.emubase.de/mame.php

Try the version optimized for your processor and see if it works any better...
