email problem
« on: April 15, 2006, 09:05:22 pm »
Hello, I can't receive any emails, my username or password is rejected.
I've made some changes to the registry. Now I'd like to return my pc to it's stat before the problem occurred. I recall that you can reset your pc by 24/48hours...I don't remember how to do this...Can anybody help?
                            thanks

You didn't specify your OS, but if it's XP right click My Computer, Properties and you'll see a tab for System Restore

I've made some changes to the registry.

what kind of changes?

as far as i know win98 doesn't have a restore function unless you have a program installed like GoBack or something.  ME has a restore function.

what program are you using to check your email?  Outlook express?  Seems like whatever you changed in the registry you should be able to change back in the email program.  If not, and you can't figure out how to fix it, then start using another email program.

Hello, I made many changes to the registry. I've deleted files, changed numbers. I've re-installed W98SE hoping that the email problem would be solved. I'm using Outlook Express 6.0. I've checked accounts and options.
I am repeatedly prompted for my username and password but they are always rejected.
I'm guessing that this problem started after a HijackThis scan.
I installed Pegasus, which ran with an error. I re-installed W98SE, now Pegasus has dissapeared.

can you view your emails via the webmail interface.  Most places allow you to login in over the web and check your emails.  At least this way you'll know your login and password are still correct.

You could also open up express and export your emails to a personal pst file, then try to remove the program through Add Remove Programs - then reinstall.  If it's something more sinister then back up all your personal stuff, format that c: drive and start again.  And avoid messing with the registry.

I agree with CDBROWN....at this point, trying to straighten out the registry, might be more trouble than it's worth.  Back up what you need, and start from scratch.  After re-install, run a backup program (windows backup if nothing else), and hopefully you won't run into the problem again.  sometimes you gotta "kill the patient, to cure the disease"   ;)

Upgrading to XP would also be recommended (if possible).

Good luck!
