Best flash device for Nintendo DS
« on: April 15, 2006, 07:38:11 pm »
Hi! I'm looking for the best flash device for the NDS. I have a flash advance 2 for the GBA and I'm looking at playing some homebrew,Pocket NES and some DS backups on the DS.
I see that the M3 and supercard are talked about alot but no reviews Has anyone on the boards tried them? If so what are the pros and cons of them.
One more question. If I bought a bigger flash card for the GBA can I load DS backups on it and play on the DS?
Thanks

The M3 is constantly rated the "better" one from what I've read.

I mentioned this in PP, but my roommate has an M3 and it is great.  Drag and drop files, easy to use, etc etc.  It really is a nice piece of hardware.  I'll be picking one up once I get myself a DS Lite.

I absolutely love the M3. I did a lot of legwork researching all the options before I made my purchase. There's a faily good review here. The one major issue that I have with the M3/Passkey2 is the lack of documentation. Often, you pretty much just have to mess around until things work (or look) correctly. Even so, it was well worth the time and effort.

I've read that the when you flash the firmware it writes over the section of the "bios" that contains the WiFi info. Basically making it so that you couldn't play Mario Kart etc. online without using a backup version on a flash card. Anyone try this? Using FlashMe and still being able to play a DS card online?

Has it been confirmed yet that this will work with the DS Lite?  I don't have a DS yet, but after seeing the brighter screen on the DS Lite, I'm hoping to land one soon.

It works with the DS Lite using the passkey, I'm not sure if you can flash it like the regular DS though.  Go to http://www.m3adapter.com for more info.

That was on an old version, and it was quickly fixed once the problem was discovered.

Why would you need to flash the firmware?
You cant just plug and play like the flash linkers?
Where would be the best place to get an M3 or supercard?
Thanks again

Why would you need to flash the firmware?

You cannot run homebrew or roms in DS mode without circumventing Nintendo's protection.  hacking the firmware is one option to do this.

You cant just plug and play like the flash linkers?

GBA yes, DS no

Where would be the best place to get an M3 or supercard?

Kick Trading has them in stock. I ordered one from them last week. A couple of the other regulars here did as well. Consensus seems to be that shipping from them (in Canada) to the US takes about a week.

Just ordered mine this morning from kicktrading, I got the minisd version and a passcard2.

The kicker is that I don't have a ds yet, I'm still holding out for the US release of the lite.

(I'm gonna borrow one of the kids gba sp's)

They both have supercards and I'm wanting to see how much better the m3 is.

Also order a 2gb san disk mini sd card today, so all total, before I even get the nds I'm looking at !230.00.

I just ordered a combo from kick-trading also...

I ordered a DS Lite a little before that too (from Lik-Sang) and then started hearing rumors that the DS Lite was launching in the US on May 16th (with the New Super Mario Bros game).  Anyone hear anything about that?

Should have been a little more patient!!!  :banghead:

Right now the May 16th launch date is just a rumor.  It could happen you never know.  But you would think if it was going to come out that soon they would let the retailers know by now.  More then likely it won't come out in the states untill some time in June.  When it does come out in the states it is supposed to sell for around $149.99 so you didn't really spend that much more to import it even if you are only going to get it a few weeks early.  Plus like with the Regular DS the US version will probably only come in white.  So if you ordered a different color you can console you self in that it was worth the extra $60 because your DS Lite looks cooler than every one elses.  ;)

Well after reading this I said what the hell, and went ahead and ordered the blue model from lik-sang.

Hopefully by this time next week I'll have everything here.

Probably should've gotten the blue one.. I went with white.  ::)
Ahh well...

To be honest, one of the main reasons I decided to go with the DS Lite was seeing how bright the screen looked.. I was real close to replacing my older SP with one of the brighter ones, but after seeing the new DS, I went for it.

So it could've been worse.. I could've spent that money on the new SP AND forked out $$ for the DS Lite!

This was my first time dealing with lik-sang.com.  I got email confirmation yesterday that the package shipped (I ordered it Saturday) and it arrived at my house today!  :o

Both my kids have the new model sp's, so that's why I wanted a ds lite, (Why should daddy get a toy that doesn't look as good as the 6 year olds??), and I really wanted a green one, but nintendo just doesn't seem to like green.

I figure I'll have my lite for most of the year, and if the kids want one for xmas, I can just flashme and new ones I buy them and let them keep using their supercards. Not as good compatibility, but still plenty of fun for the kids.

When you say not as good compatitbility, do you mean the Supercards, or DS's that have been "Flashme"d?

Im using the Neomax 1GB package, (flash linker and magic key 3) on my DS running the latest firmware, its okay with earlier games, but the newer stuff is becoming harder and harder to get running, a lot of it I cant run yet (metroid prime hunters etc).  Hopefully an all in one solution will come about soon ???   BTW it works fine with the GBA SP, 95% of roms ive tried are just simply burnt using the relevant software, then auto produces a menu for you to choose from.  Anyone tried the G6 with DS?

Not sure what he means, but I flashedme'd my DS a few nights ago and I'm using an M3 CF. I've not found any games yet that won't run, including Metroid Prime Hunters.

My DS Lite is soooo close...
Should be delivered to my work on monday.

My m3 mini sd should be there also, but much later since the mailman brings them.
I got my 2gb mini sd on wensday, Been using it in my supercard sd, and it works fine.

Can't wait...

P.S. I've never even played a ds but I had the extra money and wanted something to listen to music, play videos and entertain me. I couldn't come up with something better than a ds with moonshell.

Yeah, I saw that the other day... ouch!

Well, at least I know that if I brick my DS Lite when I try to flash the firmware, another one can be had for a decent price.
