Has anyone here made one of these degaussing coils before? I don't have any spare monitors to use for parts so I'm going to have to make my own

. I take it that I get some magnet wire and make a loop 6-8" in diameter and make sure its 3/8" thick then solder on a lightbulb socket and a momentary switch. My monitor has a degaussing function on the menu and when I select it it does its thing (makes the screen all wobbly) and removes the discoloration but then 2 seconds later there is a click and the discoloration reapears. I have tested the monitor in a different location to eliminate the possibility that something near might be causing it. Any help would be appreciated.

Here are a couple links to making a "degauser" of sorts , I have tried it with a couple of Hd magnets with great success. One of my monitors doesn't have a degauser and this is how I "fix" em'

Dang, video won't work. I think I'm either doing it wrong or the magnets I'm using aren't powerful enough.

personally i feel you may be a nutter,all monitors use pretty much the same degauss set up,so if you are missing your degauss coil then just look around your local tv repair shop skip for a tube with the coil still on and nick it otherwise you will have to degauss your tube every day for the rest of its life

My monitor has a degaussing coil built in that's not the problem.

My problem is that the built-in degaussing coil isn't degassing.

depending on your chassis(but they all pretty much the same) you will find a 3 legged black or white plastic componant just after the mains fuse,this is called a ptc componant-this is your problem because this componant controls the voltage to your degauss coil

When I try to degauss it with the built-in degausser it clears up all the messed up the discoloration, but only for a few seconds before I hear a click then the discolorations reapear in the same spots. That makes me think that the built in degausser is working. Would my local TV repair shop have an external deguasser I could rent?

Just hold the trigger and move it around the front of the monitor.
Works like a charm.

I've got 2 speakers that came out of a TV above my monitor. I figure that they should be shielded. They are mounted just like alot of the other arcade speakers are oriented.

try moving your speakers away from the tube,this is a common problem and very simple to rectify

where exactly on the screen is gaussing problem,if its in the corners then it could be a magnetised bolt,if your tube has been subjected to long term magnetic fields then your proberly correct only a manual degauss would help-but i must say this rare-any chance of a picture?

The most discolored area is the upper left corner. The lower left corner is also discolored. This is a monitor I got off ebay so I'm not sure what it has been subjected to.

Man this really sucks. I tried the soldering gun and it helped a little bit but then powered it off then on and it came back just as bad. I have no money in my budget to get a new 22" monitor.

EUREKA!! I took my monitor out to disassemble it to try to see if that would do anything and to double check interference problems. While I had it out I was playing with the menu options again. I came across one function called "Adjust Purity". This changed the colors in the corners of the monitor!!
