DVD Archive on HD with ability to watch
« on: April 10, 2006, 05:16:54 pm »
hey guys,

i've been reading up on this, but didn't have much knowledge of it to begin with, and wanted to see if anyone had done something like this or had a place to view good information.

most of my google searches lead me to dvd burning and ripping software and not to information about ripping to your hard drive or using virtual drives to view the material.

i'd really love to rip my futurama and ghost in the shell to my comp for viewing and to play around with some ideas i have for an archive/dvd player/tivo machine.

feel free to give me opinions too, and i do already realize it'll take up a helluvalot of space.  fire away.

I don't know too much, but I think that there is computer dvd playing software out there that can read .iso files. so I think if you would rip a dvd into a .iso you would be able to watch it on your computer via the software.

Don't take my word on this, but I think that nero showtime or cyberlink powerdvd can do this...

I didn't look this link over, but it may help

Get yourself a copy of DVD Decrypter.  Just recently the licensing has changed since it was bought by a different company so it's no longer "freeware" but to anyone with an internet connection and half a brain it still is...

It has been the best and always will for getting the information off a DVD and onto your HD in an unencrypted form.  You'll be able to rip as ISO or bare files off the disk, so that they'll be stored in a folder instead of the ISO.

I'd suggest doing the ISOs and then just getting Daemon tools it's pretty simple to use.  All you have to click on it's tray icon and navigate to your movie of choice and your computer will think the original disk is in the drive.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Power DVD has the option to view DVD files from the Hard Drive.  Just rip the movie using your favourite ripper - I use CloneDVD with no probs - then use PowerDVD to playback.

I also use the arniWorx registry hack along with DAEMON tools, which allows you to navigate to the iso file in explorer and mount it with a right-click. Obviously it's not essential, but I find it more intuitive to follow that process when you are just casually browsing your movie folder not sure what you want to watch next.

dvd shrink is also a quick, easy, free way of ripping a dvd to your hdd.

ok...

so when you take iso images, with movies it's simple and you get the movie, but my main goal is to copy episodes of tv shows on dvd to my comp.  can i just pull off episodes from the dvd or do i get all or nothing?  i know i could just try it out, but i want info before i buy anything, unless there is a good dvd ripper out there for free.

can you edit iso's?  i probably should just wiki the iso questions, huh...

i'll be right back...

Play around with dvd shrink, you can just pull of what you want if you don't want the whole dvd.  Also don't forget the option to reincode to divx or such.  Thats what I do and saves lots of room with little loss in quality.  I don't see any need to keep it in iso format.
Also something like magic iso will allow you to edit an iso.  Doom9 is a good sorce for info on this kind of stuff.
