Looking for an old school PSX chip...
« on: April 07, 2006, 08:59:28 pm »
Hello, I'm looking for a stealth 7 wire chip for an old school playstation model SCPH-5501.  There are some games I'd like to play in my cab and I have an old PSX just collecting dust so I figured i'd look for a chip.  These things have to be in pretty low demand by now and I was just wondering if anyone knew of a good source where I could pick one up cheap for this never ending project of mine.  PM me or post here.  Thanks a bunch!!

Looks like ChipZone still sells 'em. $13. Here's a link.

I don't remember what the difference is between the 6-wire and 7-wire models.

Thanks, I was thinking about getting one from there and I guess I will have to if I can't find aything else.  I just was hoping to get around the $5.95 shipping on a $5.97 chip that I imagine is just takine up space.  Thanks though and I guess if I don't hear anything else in the near future I'll just have to suck it up  ;D

Yeah, I know what you mean. You'd think they'd be selling for like $2 each on eBay all over the place. But I suppose no one is making them anymore so the volume isn't there and prices won't come down. How long before prices go up instead of down because it's become a rare item!

Maybe check eBay. Or consider buying another PSX that already has the chip installed.

We still regularly use our PSX for kids games, the NES emulator (IMBNES), and an occasional shooter or two.

Heh, I guess you're right but I always just envisioned them sitting stockpiled (still large enough volumes) and never being sold so people'd let them go out at cost lol.  I really don't mind the $5.97 for the chip but along with everyone else it's always the shipping that hurts....  $6 to ship a chip lol, one pound packages can be sent priority mail for $4.05 and I know these tiny chips weigh a lot.  A $0.37 stamp and an envelope would be fine for me on a $6 chip or first class for a couple bucks at the most.  Oh well that's life...  (end rant)

I'll try to hold out for a couple weeks or so in hopes that someone stumbles along this thread and actually has the box full that is in my dreams (or at least one) and will let one go for cheap.  But I'm sure that I'll prolly be contacting chipzone in a couple weeks.

On a side not thanks for the link to that NES emulator.  I guess I never looked into any PSX emulation since I had a dreamcast and with NesterDC I never needed anything else.  I have NES emulated all over the place (along with my 480 original cartriges) but it never hurst to have another  ;D  I'll have to check that out for something to do.  Thanks pmc!!

Send an email over to this guy: barracuda420@ hotmail.com

He sells PSX chips for $7 shipped and if you don't want to order from him www.eurasia.nu sells chips for $4 + $5 worldwide shipping.
