Question for LCD MAME Owners/Builders
« on: April 07, 2006, 08:52:27 pm »
Hello all  ;D

I'll preface this by saying yes, I have done a search on LCD's and haven't found an answer to my question  :-\

OK, for those who runs a modern 19" LCD with MAME:

1. How does it look with games?

2. Does screen rotation bring about any weird problems with MAME?

The main reason I'm asking is I'm converting over an old Double Dragon cab (it's a generic cab that has held many different games so I'm not destroying a classic, only giving it more life  :applaud:) and want . . . nah need to have a rotating monitor.  Doing a rotating LCD is so much easier than rotating a shelled CRT, so I'm looking at all my options before we start the build-up.

Thanks for looking and have a great weekend,

Cheers

To my eyes, a good LCD monitor is indistinguishable from a crt monitor for mame.  Make sure it has a good viewing angle.

Thanks Fraser, any little bit helps.

I think in the end, I'm going to borrow a buddies LCD for the weekend and play around with it to see how well it works out.

Have a good day

I'm resurrecting this thread because I'd like some thoughts on this as well from current LCD users.  I was planning to use a 21" CRT, but playing the vertical games I love like Ikari, Raiden, DoDonPachi, etc. just seem a tad small.  I really like the idea of rotating a 19" LCD and would appreciate some thoughts from people who currently use that setup or have tried it.

I have a Viewsonic
http://www.viewsonic.com/products/desktopdisplays/lcddisplays/proseries/vp201s/

and it seems to work great. It works very well under Mame concerning rotation. For some of the smaller LCDs, you may have to purchase a replacement stand since many models don't allow rotation. The one I've listed above does rotate as is.

Here's a link with a few screenshots.

The pixels on an lcd are 3 vertical stripes, when you pivot it, it becomes 3 horizontal lines, which takes a bit of getting used to.

Also older lcds are crap for vertical viewing angle, which becomes your horizontal so check this out before decasing the screen
