While browsing the other day I came across another good guide for disabling services in XP.
http://qwertymaniac.wordpress.com/2006/03/22/disabling-useless-services-and-sppeding-up-your-computer/
It's difficult to tell if it has made much speed difference as the machine I tried this on is not really pushed however the boot time was improved and it has been stable.
I believe the Black Viper site which previously had a guide has been discontinued?
