hacking video goodness
« on: April 06, 2006, 12:22:33 am »
Hello all

i put this here because it kinda has to do with video.  Anyway, you know thoes video now color things going for 20 bucks at wal mart or similar, right?  Well i bought one to hack into the video input, and make a hmd. (Head mounted display)  Ive figured out the power input, its kinda obvious, but i want it to have rca input as well, for the video atleast.  If anyone has any help, id be much apreciated.  Also, i did some searching, but could find nothing.  This will primarily be for counsle lan partys where i don't wanna drag a tv around.  So yeah.  Thanks in advance.

so let me get this right,you want to use the display from a video now and run a consule on it?does a video now have any external inputs?have you taken one apart to see what the screen has in the way of input cable?i would imagine the screen will take a rgb input but it may be unique to their system-only way forward is get one realising that you may fry it in the process

well, i have one that i took apart, and i got to the screen.  I don't know if it will help, but i have the product number.

WD-X2116V-1CLWg

from what i can tell, its a comercially made lcd screen resold under the video now thingy.  i have located the common video ground, and have determend a total of 24-25 pins on the ribbon cable.   and no ports, if it had any, i doubt i'd have posted here, lol.  I am begining to wish it had ports.

it sounds like the display has built in decoding,i don't know how you would bypass that so you only require an rgb input,sorry,only way forward is full schematic of display

Never heard of a "video now" but here is some info:

WD-X2116V-1CLWG

Breakdown:

W=brand:wintek corp.
D=customers design LCM  (ie its not a standard LCM screen)
X=color stn
2116=display function (segment numbers/character lines/etc...)
V=package of driving circuit
1=temperature range&view direction
c=lcd model & background color (C = Colour STN)
L=backlight type (L=LED)
W=backdight color (W=White)
G=sample version

As it's a custom LCM you can't get the exact specs.

Similar displays from wintek:

I suggest you may be out of luck, the 24pins suggest there is not likely to be a simple standard video connection. Unless of course, there is already a video/rgb->LCD converter elswhere in your gizmo....
