Pentranic Setup (pic)

Hello all,

I'm setting up a Pentranic CGA kit w/a AVGA from ultimarc and I've got some serious issues. I can't get any sort of reasonable picture - it looks like I'm having some sort of refresh rate problem - but I don't see how that can be (xp is running at 640x480 60Hz) (This is not  to mention that the thing will need degaussed in a major way when I jump this first hurdle.) I have followed the setup directions for teh AVGA to the letter - and when I first started it seemed like I had a better picture... Could this be a monitor problem, an AVGA problem, chassis problem, the hacked VGA cable?

None of the controls on the chassis come close to fixing this... I'm looking for any input anyone has.

I am no expert but maybe you need a video amplifier?

Combine the H and V sync or disconnect the H sync. Try that.

Right now the H and V sync are combined into a single input for t he monitor. If I disconnect the H sync - would the monitor work at all? The chassis doesn't allow for separate H and V sync, so just separating them isn't an option.

...and as far as a video amp - would this be a normal symptom of that problem?

Disconnect it. 

video amp just boosts the signal.

I've got the 19inch Pentranic monitor hooked up to my Arcade VGA and Windows XP.

I had loads of problems with it to start with because I'd been using the SVGA output to run the monitor to a TV before I tried to rig it up to the Pentranic monitor. It's as if the ArcadeVGA was still trying to output a signal suitable for S-Video. I found when I hooked up my Pentranic I could barely get a stable picture I could see. The way I fixed it was to unload all the graphics card drivers and let windows boot up again.

I had to adjust the monitor to get a stable picture, (good enough to see what I was doing) then re-installed the Arcade VGA driver and then the Control panel. Once I'd done this I was able to setup the monitor perfectly.

**update**

Well, still not going great over here. Combining or disconnecting the H or V sync didn't do anything (which makes sense to me), and as for uninstalling the video drivers - I've been doing that from the beginning (several times now). I have been able to stabilize the picture, but it still looks like crap and can't be read and the color is very inconsistent. (I think manually degaussing might help with this.)

...But there is still a problem getting the image to extend to the vertical limits of the screen.

Does anyone know what causes this, or what a fix is? Getting this thing going is a real pain in the neck.

PS- anyone out there with a Pentranic - is it normal for the screen to be illegible at 640x480?

You should definitely get a stable picture at 640x480
